Why do we bother making things? Art, businesses, technologies, brands, etc. What is it all for? Why does our mind work this way, where it is fixated on bringing something new into the world? Perhaps it is our own mortality that makes us frantic and innovative in our efforts to leave an imprint on the world that will live on forever in our name.
Except for school and a few menial jobs in my early 20s, I've spent the vast majority of my waking life on the pursuit of creativity and art. It's what I do for a living and what I do for fun. I spent years trying to figure out what motivates my creativity. For me, it's not at all about achieving immortality. I know for a lot of artists it is, but I've never cared about that even a little bit. (..which is one of many reasons I've never wanted kids.) For me, creativity itself is the reward. I'm happiest when I'm recording a song in the studio, making a documentary in Sony Vegas, or making political memes in photoshop apps on my phone. ..it's why I used to not be able to finish projects when I was younger. I love the process itself. ..but I also love the end result. Watching a video or listening to a song that only exists because I created it is an awesome feeling. ..and it was just as awesome long before I got any sorts of fan bases in music and politics. I only really publish my art because "why wouldn't I? That's what you're supposed to do with it.". ..but how 'successful' any given piece is, is to me, nothing more than a nice little dopamine hit. Of course I hope people can find meaning or enjoyment from it, but in the end, I don't really care what becomes of the art. ..especially after I'm dead. We have conversations and thoughts every day that slip into the ether and are forgotten. Art is ultimately just a conversation or a thought. I have hard drives full of songs, videos, and photography that no one will ever see or hear and that's ok with me! I get to enjoy them and making them made me happy. I've had writings and memes get seen by hundreds of thousands of people and I've spent hours writing long essays that only one or two people read. ..both are valuable to me. The only time I REALLY care about what happens to my art is when someone else censors it. ..and my political content has been censored quite a bit over the last few years. But again.. it comes back to creativity. The real reason I personally hate censorship is because it's the antithesis of creativity. Philosophically and politically, I think censorship is extremely dangerous and always corrupt. ..but for me it's also very personal because creativity is the closest thing I've found to magic, god, or religion. ..so I take great offense at even my greatest enemies being censored. In my opinion, it's "blasphemous" to the concept of humanity and just a downright violation of human rights. Expression is what makes us human. Fuck you if you think you have the authority to deny me or anyone else of that!
I guess I just feel that because we've done it for so many thousands of years, most people take for granted that humans have this unique ability to create and communicate at a high level. ..but for whatever reason, I never have. It's always fascinated me since I can remember. ..as if it's some sort of exciting new technology or something. Lol Maybe because I've spent a lot of time around animals and realize just how different we are despite being so similar IDK.. But for me, the act of creating itself is where the magic is. All of the power, money, and attention that can result from that creativity is definitely enjoyable and motivating.. but it's almost completely irrelevant to the question of what truly drives my creativity. I would still be creative if I were completely isolated and forgotten by humanity. ..probably even more so because I'd have more free time.
