Reddit power users are an interesting phenomenon. The site isn’t conducive to individuals rising above the pack and getting noticed, but it happens. One of the most famous reddit users are a biologist named Unidan, who often replied to comments with thorough, informative posts on science-related topics. He was well loved for years, but one spectacular meltdown accidentally exposed some underhanded behavior and led to his banning.

Joining a years old argument here but "that's like arguing about whether a human is an ape"

Not really, it would be more like arguing if a human was an orangutan. One member if the group being the "catch all" name, rather than just saying x is y, when y is the family.

I forgive him. Bring Unidan back. I don't care that he manipulated the voting system because it brought the better side of reddit to the forefront. Reddit doesn't contain a lot of positives – it tends to be a bitter cesspit – so allow the man to cover that grime with fun science facts and birds.

I'm not even a biologist but it doesn't take an idiot to realize the guy Unidan was 'arguing' with was being stupid and wrong and it's just really sad to see. Unidan was just trying his darndest to be passionate and educate people on what is what and why. No, a jackdaw isn't a crow… the term is 'bird', good lord. You don't call coyotes wolves or tigers lions unless you genuinely don't know what one looks like and don't remember which one is which.. so why was the guy so adamant on trying to tell Unidan that jackdaws are crows?? They're 2 different birds, and crow isn't a disambiguous word like the same way you call all felines big and small 'cats'.

I also have a personal gripe with every dispute like this being dismissed as an "angry argument". I had a biology teacher like Unidan who also wanted to be correct and precise on facts but she was never angry. She just calmly educated people whenever they were wrong about something. I personally didn't like her but the people in this video were just being assholes. The only thing he was wrong about was the voting system manipulation.

the jackdaw/crow type thing has always bothered as a major pet peeve me same with dinosaurs "my favorite underwater dinosaur is" "uhm actually don't you understand there WERE no aquatic dinosaurs ?" "yes, everyone knows that, it's called a fucking colloquialism would you like me to respond genus name, filum name ? colloquialisms, they ease conversation and are normal in casual conversation, if i see a cat and i go to pet it would you go "uhm actually its a main coon cat specifically ?" shut up its a cat, if i tell you "run there's an alligator coming !!" "actually that is a crocodi*gets fucking eaten*

This video is 4 years old but I hope someone still gives me an answer. How does someone like Unidan get shadow-banned but not know it? Wouldn't he think it was kinda weird when he was suddenly not getting any upvotes on comments or submissions?

Hm. I'm really confused and I think they were both too. I checked what a "jackdaw" is on wikipedia (english is not my first language) – and found they are a genus under the corvidae family. When I went on to check which birds are in that genus, I clicked on the first one I knew – and that was a jackdaw, species. So both the species and the genus are called the same thing, but the genus includes crows and other birds lol. Not jays tho.

The guy Unidan was arguing with about the crows was an actual moron. There's more of them in the world than ever before these days but for the most part they aren't worth trying to educate.

Ive been on reddit for like eight years and my post karma is like, 31,000. Comment karma is 200,000 ish. And I use the site a lot! I don't know how the hell people accumulate millions of points. But then I don't even know how I got the amount of karma I did. Whatever posts got those upvotes probably didn't deserve it XD

as someone who loves birds and biological science I did always find it stupid when people get caught up so much on the names of things. so long as people know wtf you're referring to in that moment its ultimately unimportant except in specific cases ( for instance, a medical professional treating a snakebite will likely need to know the exact kind of snake that poisoned you. YES I'm using the term poisoned incorrectly to prove my point – you know exactly what i mean and arguing over the semantics of it is pointless and petty! ) if i call a bird a pigeon you're not going to UMMACTUALLY ROCK DOVE because everyone knows that i'm likely not referring to a victorian crowned pigeon unless we're both looking at a giant blue bird. people need to just relax, especially as names for things change constantly, even taxonomy, which is largely superficial in the first place

a fun example of how dumb taxonomy can be is arguably the most well known dinosaur ever, tyrannosaurus rex. as theories started to gain traction about it being a potential scavenger and bully rather than active predator, its name was intended to be changed because 'tyrant king lizard' doesn't fit very well for bully-scavenger. …but they kept it because the dinosaur was still cool and they wanted the equally cool name to stay with it. T-rex is scientifically called T-Rex because it's cool.

There’s a ton of corvids near my area and I never know whether or not they’re crows, grackles, ravens, rooks, or jackdaws and I think of unidan everytime

I think some of these people need to understand that their opinions and their actions only matters because they think it does. Like the cum box. That guy needs the shit beat out of him.

He actually sounds alright to me. People can get nitpicky about things they’re passionate about, and people sometimes cheat the system. He’s just human.

Hey guys! Just wanna say about the sponsor: kaspersky is not worth your money, at least for the safety aspect as I used to have it and it would constantly break and stop working. Also it's pretty useless for parental locks and shit like that.

I used to use reddit, one day I downloaded it again to see a notification. A guy had replied to an old post of mine on an even older history meme. It was a multi paragraph about how my comment on the meme showed that I didn't know what I was talking about, and that I was clearly uninformed. I did not reply because idgaf about arguing with a random redditor about a post on an old meme. He did me a favour and reminded me why I don't use reddit, even basic disagreements are often tinged with attacks at your worth and their obvious superiority.
