Jodie Landon was a minor character on Daria, but somehow was one of the most complex and interesting ones. She’s also, like, really sad.

I think the show was always about making Daria look good. And so any other character was going to look bad.

I related hard to Daria because she’s heavily autistic coded. I really enjoyed the business loan episode because it felt like an examination of Daria’s privilege. Daria is shirked and sidelined but she isnt reduced to her race and whilst her family is ish… the level of pressure on Jodie by her family feelings like adultification trauma. The fact that her dad is pushing her to go to crestmore …. when she just wants to be somewhere she won’t be tokenised. I’m not black and I don’t want to claim I understand her spevific struggles but I did relate to the themes of parental pressure. She was a great character. Mac felt… slept on. He was a jock and had numerous voice actors. He just seemed to be ‘there’ to occasionally be a sounding board for Josie. He had got 0 growth ark compared to other backgroundish characters, even Kevin, Tiffany and Chuck got more nuance.

Jodie is one of the most tragic characters i've ever seen in an animated show. and what's most tragic about it, is that from the outside (to the other characters), she looks like she has everything.
there's been talk of making a Jodie-centric spinoff show from Daria, the same way Daria spunoff from Beavis + Butthead, but i have no idea how they'd make a show with her as the MC, because Jodie doesn't get to have any autonomy in her own life, and she doesn't even fight for it (aside from the University choice right at the end of the show) because she's so worn down and drained from just maintaining everything everyone else expects of her. she's super interesting as a character, but as a MC, i can't see how they'd balance exploring and developing her without losing her in the changes required.

I haven't seen this show since I was a teenager and I believe alot of these nuisances passed over my head. With 30 year old eyes holy hell I need to re-watch this show.
Your channel is a delight and I'm really happy I found it

10:11 I think one of the biggest factors of getting the show shelved was when it was revealed Amy Schumer was going to be on the writing staff which resolved in huge backlash and doubt.

Idk telling your kid that their allowance has been over drafted at the age of 9-10 amd then probably never giving them an allowance again with the excuse that they used it all up instead of just saying they cant do it anymore is pretty mean

I love your analysis of Jodie. Daria was such a great show that even some of the non-main characters are incredibly complex and deep. I'd love to see more videos about Daria and The Office from you. You might also enjoy breaking down a show called Community.

i think they could still make a jodie spinn off, it would be really cool if she aged like normal, so in the new cartoon she could be in her early 40s. it would be interesting to see her and Daria of course take on modern america

June 16, 2026 at 3:01 pm
It's never confirmed in the show that Jodie and Mack were elected because of how they look. They were by far the most popular kids at the school, so they were the logical choice anyway. Kevin and Britany could seem like another strong contender but they had a lot of people who disliked them/were feuding with them.
Another aspect that I found kind of sad was that Jodie clearly wanted to engage with Daria more, since they're intellectual equals, but Daria inadverently often pushed away with a cynical one liner.

5:30 I think the magic is neither are correct. There's not a one size fits all approach that works for everyone. Race involved or not.
@antithoughtpolice7497
June 16, 2026 at 3:01 pm
Jodie is like if you combine Jake and Helen's upbringing, with racial tension. Mad Dog never let Jake express how he feels, making him performative growing up, and it's the middle child syndrome thrust up on her to succeed.

I think that one of the biggest opportunities that we missed with MTV canceling Daria too soon, is that they never got to expand on Jodie or Mac as fleshed out characters on the show.

Damn, this was relatable as fuck. I'm not black, but I'm Egyptian and I grew up in the UAE, where there's a lot of built in contempt for Egyptians. My parents put on me a lot of the same pressure to be perfect so that people don't get the wrong idea about us Egyptians, or that I represent my whole country. A lot of the time I was deeply conscious of being the only Egyptian in class and I flat out refused to speak Egyptian in school except with other Egyptians, I'd just speak in the Emarati dialect the entire time and would go so far as to research and ask my friends what certain words mean just so I could fit in. It got to the point where most people would assume I'm Emarati and never ask where I'm from, they'd only learn it if they asked which tribe I'm from, or check my dad's name, which was a dead giveaway

I liked the story of Jodie going to a black college. I’m white and every school I went to had very few black people. When I graduated from middle school and high school my handful of black friends went to predominantly black high schools and colleges. I remember them telling me about how excited they were to go be with more black people. My initial reaction was a little bit hurt tbh, which I’m not saying is right it was just my initial feeling. They were all super cool smart people and I’m from Philadelphia but I went to a high school that was super conservative and in Virginia. Even if my private school in Philadelphia didn’t have a ton of black people I was used to having black people around at least in daily interactions, Philly is a very diverse city. I REALLY appreciated the presence of black people and felt safer politically when I moved to Virginia where most students were extremely conservative.
It made me sort of feel bad about myself that my black friends in middle/high school didn’t feel welcome or wanted in a white setting. I can’t remember perfectly now but how they explained all their feelings to me about how they didn’t want to feel like their blackness made them stand out really impacted me and made me aware of how much I have never had to feel that way in my life.
So after years of hearing this sentiment in real life hearing that Jodie on Daria wanted to go to a school with more black people made me happy and I was rooting for her to get to go there. It made me feel like the show writers talk to actual black people.
I’m not claiming to be a perfect white woke liberal by any stretch but sadly this was one of the first times I heard a real everyday kind of sentiment that black people had personally expressed to me reiterated on TV.
Hearing this kind of stuff from black people has really inspired me in life to try to push myself out of my comfort zone culturally.

"You really can't win if you're trying to impress people that you think assume the worst to begin with." Dude, that's such an insightful take and genuinely so universal. I can't speak for the POC community of course, but more people should take on this mentality. Do what you love, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. The people who mind won't matter anyway. I feel like Daria is probably the most well written show about teens. I would have loved to see Jodie's A Different World. Her going to Turner probably kept her from having a nervous breakdown. Low key Mac saved her! It could have also been cool to a spin off where Daria and Jodie go to the same college are roommates. The cynical time of the late 90s seems like the only place a show like Daria could live.

Hard to believe that anyone would suggest that the Daria series was "woke". I'd have thought that it was an anti-woke show; to the point where it wouldn't even be shown today.

I always thought Jodie was one of the weaker characters in the series. No real development at all, she was just kind of there as the token overachiever. Even in the movie she fails to convince her parents to let her choose which college she goes to and Mack has to do it for her. Her entire personality is 'I'm sad because society expects too much of me' and she's just kind of a crappy person. She jumps down Daria's throat at the mere suggestion that she might have a character flaw. She goes behind Daria's back and applies for the wizard scholarship without telling her. The only reason I felt any sympathy for her at all is because her parents had such high expectations of her, and that's just reinforcing her only character trait. It's a shame because so many of the other characters have great development arcs and grow as people. Obviously a story needs some static characters, but Jodie felt like a missed opportunity to me. At least she got to have more of a personality than just 'Don't call me Mack-daddy'.

9:45 Just no, there never was a plan to make a spinoff of a spinoff! The Daria world is only a side note in the Beavis & Butthead universe! Maybe they should do a Daria reboot.But I don't think the show was popular enough to do a remake.
@Nexiusify

I love the character of Jodie while being smart and Daria's friend, is an antithesis to Daria's beliefs, making the idea that being smart doesn't make your beliefs the be all and there are many perspectives. Daria is one of my favourite comedy shows from my childhood and there is not a character from the cast I dislike (Except Perhaps Tom).
