The Mosque’s members aim to confront and challenge the fear surrounding Islam and call for a new kind of it including a feminist agenda, effecting a break with established gender hierarchies. Sherin is impatient. She wants change and equality now! But her haste divides her organisation to the brink of collapse.

It's easy to be a feminist Muslim woman when you were raised in Europe in a non-Islamic family. Their fathers and brothers will not threaten them or more for not properly following Islam. So I always view European women in Islam with great suspicion. I think they see a market instead of a religion.

Seyran Ateş, a German-based lawyer, women’s rights advocate, and "female imam" of Turkish origin, lives in Berlin.
She also pursued the idea of establishing her own fantasy-Islam.
Since founding the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque, she has received many death threats from muslims.
She is under permanent police protection provided by the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA).
She has lived under protection since 2006, after being threatened because of her professional work and public positions.
Religious authorities, including Egypt’s Fatwa Council, have condemned her mosque, which led to further death threats.
