Listening to her it reminded me of Sorin Kierkegaard in Fear and Trembling.
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable, insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

What she left, she never understood. I have heard her speak on islam, and she has many facts wrong; whether you like islam or not, she has little grasp on the actual religion itself, and was/is a poor representator of laying out facts about said religion. She conflates culture with islam, and then just have poor knowledge of the religion itself; regarding different laws, rights, duties etc.
To leave islam to embrace christianity, fair enough, but don't misrepresent a religion. She seem either a liar, or a fool, when doing that.

I normally don't comment on youtube videos and honestly Alex is a wonderful host, but how is nobody calling out her sanctimonious bullshit? We need to shut down the asylum system? Doesn't mind Trump's immigration policies? Here's a fun excerpt from her wikipedia page about HER OWN asylum application:
"Hirsi Ali had already admitted to friends and VVD party colleagues that she had lied about her full name, date of birth, and the manner in which she had come to the Netherlands in her asylum application"
I'll take her suggestions seriously when she takes the lead, packs her stuff up and heads out of the country.

I still don't understand her switch to a religion.
Especially because she lived in the Netherlands for a long time. And ashamed to say , she was rejected politically because her views about islam.
The people loved her.
In the Netherlands being spiritual with a community is a big thing , without the need for a fixed religion with an almighty god.
Especially in the east of the country.
Spiritually feeling the need to be connected is very different of taking the gospels as truth.
I am having a hard time connecting the Hirsi Ali from the Netherlands from the one I hear now.
From Atheist to full Christian ( meaning , believing every word of it ) must be a big life change.
You can be spiritual, or even christian , without fully believing the bible or even really believing there is a god.
You just might like the cultural aspects of it and/or the moral idea behind it.
That black and white thing , I don't get. Maybe an US thing ? You need to be either full blown atheist anti religion Or religious ?
Do you as Americans feel you have to choose a side?

I put the whole discussion to ChatGPT and told it to analyze what might have changed in Ayaan, and this is what it concluded…
Ayaan Hirsi Ali did not suddenly become convinced that Jesus literally resurrected after three days based on new evidence. She openly admits she cannot explain the miracles, cannot rationalize them, and knows they make no sense scientifically. What changed was not the evidence — it was her emotional state, her psychology, and her need for peace.
Here are the main points ChatGPT identified:
1. She openly says she CHOSES to believe, not that she is convinced.
In the interview, she says: “I choose to believe in the resurrection.”
She admits she cannot explain the miracles. She separates reason from faith and admits belief here is not about logic — it’s about comfort.
2. She was in a deep emotional crisis.
She describes being in “complete darkness,” terrified, depressed, empty, confused. Therapists even told her she was “spiritually bankrupt.” She had PTSD from childhood trauma. This is exactly the state where people reach for unconditional love, safety, and certainty. Religious belief often fills that void.
3. She didn’t convert because miracles became more believable, but because the feeling of belief soothed her.
She describes feeling “peace,” “energy,” “calm.” She compares believing in miracles to appreciating poetry or music — meaning it’s a subjective emotional experience, not a factual discovery.
4. She admits the stories are ancient, unverifiable, and she uses modern reasoning to read them — but chooses them anyway.
This is not logic. This is psychological refuge.
5. She sees Christianity as civilization, stability, identity, and community.
She repeatedly says societies built on Christianity are happier and more prosperous. This is a sociological argument, not a supernatural one. She likes what Christianity represents culturally — not because she proved the resurrection.
6. She converted because Christianity gave her emotional structure, belonging, and unconditional love — not because she found evidence for miracles.
This is a classic pattern: trauma → crisis → search for meaning → religion feels like healing.
7. She views belief as an act of will, not truth.
Her own words make it clear: she “chooses” to believe, because belief brings her inner peace, not because she found historical proof.
Bottom line (ChatGPT’s conclusion):
Ayaan didn’t become a Christian because she suddenly believed the resurrection was historically or scientifically true. She became Christian because she found emotional relief, mental stability, identity, meaning, and unconditional love in the Christian story after a lifetime of trauma.
She knows the miracles aren’t rationally explainable — she admits that directly.
What changed was her emotional world, not the evidence.
Anyone watching the interview closely can see this. It’s not about logic — it’s about healing.

No idea what’s missing from her life that she ignores all reason to believe in something.
@toh786

23:40 – I mean, if God is going to test you, it was logical to dictate what is Halal and Haram to allow for actual and just judgment to take place? Not believing in a designated set of morals can justify any sort of behaviour without judgment.
"So did you think that We created you for nothing, and that you will not be brought back to Us?” [Quran 23:115]
25:40 – Everyone being born is sin is also something which Islam also greatly disagrees. Hence, Islam is strictly against the idea of a original sin and the need for a human sacrifice to atone the sins of another.
"Whoever chooses to be guided, it is only for their own good. And whoever chooses to stray, it is only to their own loss. No soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another . And We would never punish ˹a people˺ until We have sent a messenger ˹to warn them" [Quran 17:15]
27:20 – Islam also talks about how people are constantly forgiven, no matter how many sins are committed.
"Say, ˹O Prophet, that Allah says,˺ “O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins.1 He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [39:53]
There was also a story about a man who killed 100 people and was eventually forgiven because he was sincere in his repentance [Sahih al-Bukhari 3470].
46:30 – The bible had a commentary for 2000 years, hence that makes it true? With that logic, the Qur'an also had a variety of commentary since its conception, hence this appears to be a bit of a double standard.
"It is He Who has revealed the Book to you. Some of its verses are absolutely clear and lucid and these are the core of the Book. Others are ambiguous . Those in whose hearts there is perversity, always go about the part which is ambiguous, seeking mischief and seeking to arrive at its meaning arbitrarily, although none knows their true meaning except Allah. On the contrary, those firmly rooted in knowledge say: 'We believe in it; it is all from our Lord alone.' No one derives true admonition from anything except the men of understanding." [Quran 3:7]
It is always interesting to hear another perspective, but careful understanding of the verses and faith reveals a whole other perspective, which is interesting to investigate.

Hitchens was a beautiful orator but never really debated anyone, all scripted, never took on his opponents points, or even considered them, all wit and show and loquacious prowess. His main qualm was with man made religion anyway. Would like to have seen Ali debate him but he wouldn't really engage so would no doubt have been a pointless exercise
@jamesnickpour9449
December 20, 2025 at 7:14 am
If spirituality cured Ayaan of her troubles, there is much to think about; there's the obvious question of divinely inspired remedy, but also, spirituality as an evolutionary tool to balance existential crises(troubles as Ali framed it). Fact remains, she testifies that a belief in the Christian God has "permanently cured" her of her "troubles".. wonder what Dawkins would have to say about such an eventuality, especially considering his staunch support, resect and fondness for her

She just turned 56 and dwarfs that 'seeker' …. he gets nowhere, nowhere….because he stands for nothing. you discover nothing if you stand for nothing.
When Aayan was agnostic she was agnostic, when she was atheist she was full-blown courageously atheist. but after 100 plus videos , years of searching , and a degree in theology and philosophy he comes up with sht, nothing. "I am an atheist agnostic" — that is being a coward in BIG LETTERS

It sounds to me that Ayaan has found comfort and peace in the moral doctrines of Christianity and thus has “chosen to believe” in the rest of it. And I don’t think there is necessarily anything wrong with that.

I‘m eternally impressed by Alex O‘Connor, but I was disappointed by this interview. There’s nothing wrong with its gentle tone – no need to be aggressive or cynical – but just letting someone as intelligent as Ayaan Hirsi Ali get away with ducking questions like the ones about Trump or her belief in the resurrection? That’s too easy. Please don’t turn into Lex, Alex. Promised?

10:34: "It's important to separate reason from faith. I'm not going to prove it [a miracle], and you don't need proof; you believe."
25:10: You don't have to choose between faith and reason; you can have both of them, and in fact, I find Christianity a religion of reason, much more about reason than anything."
Does anybody else feel like these statements are not consistent with each other? I also feel like the second one is a contradiction of itself.

Over an hour of watching and listening, Ayan failed to speak to why she now believes Christianity is true.
Good for her that she found religion through depression but that's saying very little about the true claims of Christianity.
For my take, Ayan as a former Muslim who grew up indoctrinated to believe in a Supreme deity, always had that within her. She left the Muslim faith not because is a lack of belief in a god; she left because of cultural and traditional reasons. She didn't not want to be forced into a marriage she knew nothing about and that singular event made her to rethink her faith.

One of the rare few atheists that can induct an interview of a christian without severely challenging them EVERY sentence or attempting to counter it completely instead of letting them speak, as an atheist myself this needs to happen a bit more often and interviews should be separated from debate.
26:15 I would also say this is not 'baked' into the religion………….this is the western reading of the bible but if you look at the eastern reading…..which predates this catholic, lutherian reading by a couple hundred years as all of this is POST paul interpreted and misinterpretations of paul. If you look at oriental orthodoxy aka the miaphysites (Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Malankara/Indian syrian based church) you will see a very different perspective and arguments and approach to christianity than any of the others…….yes……they are a denomination………however……they are (as the name suggests) the original denomination meaning……not really a denomination…….now that there's so many yes but they were the original teachings of the faith itself and present themselves intellectually as such in conversation. I highly recommend Alex to bring one of them on and discuss all his grievance's with a priest or a recognized person in that sect I believe it would be a good conversation and beneficial to him

I am at timepoints 29:00 and I have to comment on this, I feel sorry for her and her upbringing on Islam and the Quran. I have been in what seems like a similar position, but after years of agnosticism & atheism I realise I wasn't educated enough on Islam, but rather on culture. In the Quran God tells us again and again he will forgive us. The idea of Forgiveness/forgive‐root is mentioned~234 times & Mercy: ~339 times. God tells us again & again he is merciful, he will forgive us. All we have to do is repent and turn back and I completely agree that culturally this is not taught. As far as being punished for thoughts, it's quite the opposite… The Prophet ﷺ said:“Allah has forgiven my Ummah for what they think to themselves, so long as they do not speak of it or act upon it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6664, Sahih Muslim 127)… and in fact, The Prophet ﷺ said:“If someone intends to do a good deed and does not do it, Allah writes it down as one complete good deed… If he intends to do a bad deed and does not do it, Allah writes it down as one complete good deed.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6491, Sahih Muslim 131) We are literally rewarded for not doing the bad deeds we think about. Regardless of what you believe, I do feel there is a lot of misinformation and wanted to share this.

An ex muslim athiest here! This is my first time listening to her and I think she just gave up rationality in order to cope with inner struggles which is also understandable. As a staunch rationalist myself, I too, sometimes feel the need to be drawn towards religion but practically I don't see myself ever doing that in the future. To cope with depression and other life struggles, I would always have various forms of "art" or any other creative idea to cling on to but never religion, and definitely not Abrahamic religions! It's just simply impossible for me.

Alex, this interview was "a breath of fresh air".
I discovered Aayan about 1 year ago. She intrigued me because she seemed like a woman beyond her years.
I am a grandmother and yet Aayan's life seems to have taken so many "Pilgram' Progress" roads!
She is so full of sweet amazing grace.
Thank you for your respectful dialog and thoughtful questions.
(I hesitate to watch debates or dialogs between athiests and Christ followers. My experience is the 'tone' of disdain that comes forth.)
I hope you have Aayan as a guest in the future. I look forward to it.😊
