I wonder if the relation between left/right visual fields and right/left hemispheres have something to do with the fact that in most cultures we write text from left to right? Or other such things

For a man who doesn’t like psychedelics and has never had a breakthrough experience, he sure does seem to already have many of the perspectives that a breakthrough experience on psychedelics brings you.

I'm not sure how any of these more complex ideas about life and consciousness are actually mutually exclusive with materialism? All of these very real and complex philosophies can be emergent and that doesn't make them any less meaningful or important. The gap is not at the beginning or the top, like a god, it's in between, more like a missing link.

Why is the survival /evolution of this organism we call the earth/universe so important is the question. People are always questioning 'purpose'. What if our purpose was to keep some other organism alive and well (that's our function while here). Would that be considered a worthy altruistic cause?? Would we be happy being it's sacrifice (with our occasional joys/wins in our existence) with our share of woes and our ultimate deaths.

Love. A chemical, evolutionary, survival and reproduction reaction. Its not "magic". Its perfectly explicable. You feel love when your body is telling you to reproduce. You feel love when you have an inherit bias to look after your own family genes, Pure survival.

"if you think love is an emergent property of more fundamental substance, you're an idiot" – this guy.

I feel like the bias is coming from him, not the other way around.

At one point you, Alex, ask if a psychedellic experience could cause a shift to right brain functioning. What that did for me was make me realize that I/we can absolutely experience the world and ourselves differently than we do. Later, I realized just how much is given to us by way of unconscious processing and eventually I realized that I had always regarded reflection as a useful way to understand better and so regarded intuition as something more productive than brainstorming hypotheticals.

Eventually I realized that I have faith in that and it serves me in the way faith in God serves Christians as it permits them to proceed in faith without the urgency to reach conclusions and formalize what we know. Partly because of psychedelic experiences I came to believe that holding a space for realization was a very good way to live in the world. But it took reading The Matter With Things to disabuse me of the primacy of matter or physicalism. I will never be religious but spiritually I am content.

"The people who are the most dogmatic, and most angry and vehement on the internet, are people for whom it's never occurred to them that the other person is anything other than stupid because they don't believe the way they do."

Oh, the irony. This guy just spent the last half an hour berating people for being narrow minded and ignorant for not seeing things the way he does.

The man completely lost me at the middle of the conversation. When he claims an organism can adapt to a new threat that didn't encounter before, that's exactly the point of evolution. Adaptability to the environment not only in long periods of time with natural selection, but also developing the ability to adapt to short-term threats. And I don't agree the threat is completely new in most cases. Actually, when an organism genome hasn't encountered a threat in long time periods, or never, it becomes very vulnerable to it. There are many examples of almost complete extinction of a society due to encountering bacteria or viruses that where new to its immunological system. There is also the other, very studied in psychology, side of the coin, where we have developed a lot of emotions and biological systems that where used for millions of years to deal with certain natural threats, but now in the lack of those threats in our society, they malfunction and give us a broad variation of mental disorders due to biological misuse of those mechanisms initially developed to protect, such as stress and anxiety.

There are much more claims this man makes that I find unfounded and blind to our discoveries the last century (genome carrying almost no information? where did he heard that?), but I suppose is time lost to cover every single missed point in a YouTube comment lost in a sea of thousands.
