Wall Street Week | Rattner on Manufacturing, US Public Buses, Milan’s Boom, AI & The Future of Work
This week, Steve Rattner assesses whether tariffs and trade policy are truly reviving US manufacturing and what it would take to deliver sustained economic growth. And, the US needs more buses — but are we buying them the wrong way? Plus, Milan’s hosting of the Winter Olympics comes as a wave of high net-worth individuals move to the Italian city. Later, is the real battle in the AI era between humans and machines or humankind itself?
Chapters:

00:11:52 – US bus problem

Mass transit in the US a scam, that's why buses, and trains, are usually empty.
Idealization is divorced from practicality and service. I was kicked out of California's institute of transportation studies because I wanted to say this.
The industry needs to be criticized honestly.
More importantly, urbanization need to be redesigned from the bottom up for mass transit to work.

Trump's impressive showmanship is equal to his cultivated ignorance and so is the cabinet he selects. His and their incompetance is stellar, like the world has never seen before.

Service jobs have low productivity. If we lose all our manufacturing jobs, you can forget raising productivity.

AI is going to be a tremendous asset for entrepreneurs. It will unleash human productivity and creativity. Government will be the monkey wrench in the works.

I'm old enough to remember the hysteria over robots being installed on assembly lines and replacing assembly workers. Yes, jobs were lost, but many manufacturing jobs remained intact because many tasks simply can't be duplicated by expensive robotic equipment (particularly for small businesses), and the economy adjusted. AI might have a huge impact on intellectual "expertise" and access, but everybody lives in a physical reality – AI can't harvest food like apples, provide physical caregiving, mow lawns, shovel snow. I'll start to worry when AI can change a diaper, flush my toilet or make my bed. Right now, I'm more upset with how AI speculation is messing with the stock market, possibly building a gigantic bubble that, when it bursts, may cause a recession.

I can see the damage now . When I talk to young people I am 68.
I hear them very much considering the future of AI. Where the outcome is less jobs . I also hear that they are not considering marriage or children. Why I can't blame them for the situation is that of too much unknown for the future job portal. They say that they can't afford a home or rental. Still living at home if lucky to have parents to advocate that opportunity. So what will AI be to all of us in the future world. I think it's going to be unhealthy for mental health. 😢

I hope Trump and future US presidents keep the import tariffs intact. That is only way the we can protect the existing jobs and have some control on supply chain. I understand the old man's (Steven Rattner) point view, but it's a failed policy. Import tariffs are the only hope we have.

2:34 there have been ZERO new Auto Plants announced under Trump ⛔️
🏭 all announcements have been shifting production between existing plants or previously announced under Biden

You can buy a gas or diesel bus for $180,000.
And there's no danger of toxic metal halide off gassing, killing your passengers.

Well, there is one factory I know of that's being built. That's true. You're so huge, it'll take a couple of years. It's by lego near richmond, virginia, it's so huge that I bet it's gonna produce enough lego for the whole nation

…and it's silly for Rattner to say Trump doesn't understand economics because he said we could at 15%. It's typical Trump hyperbole. Anyone who thinks he was serious is delusional

May 6, 2026 at 3:52 pm
The Rattner interview was terrible. Contrary to what you said, he does not know manufacturing…he's a WS bean-counter. His comment that EV sales are down because of Trump's policies is ridiculous. Poor EV sales are due to lack of demand NOT because of policy. In fact, the large writedowns are a function of the jawboning of Biden and the virtue signaling of auto companies to irrationally switch from gas autos. Range anxiety and cost are massive barriers. Expect more from a smart guy like Rattner.

No matter how cheap the product is, if you don’t have jobs, you are nothing. Atypical globalist, incompetent elite who has no idea in the real world. The world is not the ideal place where they think from their perspective. It’s foolish to give up your supply chain sovereignty and security.
@PrinceOfOpinion
May 6, 2026 at 3:52 pm
31:15 I wish when they put the name of the people they’re interviewing on screen that they’d be a bit more descriptive with the subtitle occupations. “Former media executive” is so vague. I know I can look him up, but if they’re going to add occupation subtitles anyways, a tiny bit more detail wouldn’t hurt in my opinion.
@MikeMiller-g1b
May 6, 2026 at 3:52 pm
There is no fluff to the economics of making products here. You cannot build a plant in a short amount of time. If there is no long term assurance of profits, the facility will not be built. The Trump term is only 4 years or less. Why sink the money into a location or country that no longer supports business? Tariffs are anti business and anti competition toxic stuff for business while also being consumer poison. Very definition of Lose-Lose arrangement.

Those are nice points but what if the countries that manufacture decide they want to move up the value chain and challenge US and decide to use their control over supply chains as a weapon oh wait that sounds a lot like china 😂
