Understanding the Different Elements of Music

92.9 The Torch | January 28, 2025

Why is that even after you’ve learned all the notes to a piece of music, it still doesn’t sound like you want it to? Music is made up of many different elements such as rhythm, dynamics, phrasing and tempo, but most of the time we only focus on one of these… notes!

This results in a performance that lacks any energy and is not so enjoyable to listen to. In this music lesson, I suggest that we start from a place of listening and observing instead of focusing on just the notes.

This will result in a musical performance that is more enjoyable to the listener and clearly communicates our thoughts, emotions and ideas.

I use the example of how we communicate ideas in language to show how music can also be used to communicate ideas.
