These Ancient Arcade Machines will Blow Your Mind | Nostalgia Nerd

Javy coffee takes me 30 seconds to make but tastes so good. So if you love coffee, go to: https://thld.co/javy_nostalgianerd_0922 and get 25% off your order using my code NOSTALGIANERD. Thanks to Javy Coffee for sponsoring today’s video! @javy.coffee #drinkjavy ~ Recently I found myself at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Now Gamescom 2022 is the largest gaming convention in Europe, so it contains a lot of wonders. But one of the things that stood out was a bunch of Sega Electro Mechanical arcade machines nestled about. Now these machines are from the 60s and 70s, but are still great fun to play. They’re also incredibly impressive, so let’s take a look at #gamescom2022 whilst taking a focus on these impressive machines.

Big thanks to Marta for helping me film this video, and generally putting up with my nonsense.

Thanks to Sam and https://sliceanddice.cafe/ for letting me use their café space. You should go, it’s a great board game cafe in Norwich.

Correction: Midway's Basketball released in 1968, not 1964. KLOV incorrectly listed it as 1964, but Cash Box magazines from that era show it actually released in 1968 and was licensed from Sega. So Sega's Basketball from 1966 is the original, while the Taito and Midway versions are clones.

Commodore 64 was my first computer. I bought it from a neighbour family, the used system with a monitor, two disk drives, laser printer and two disk cases with about 500 floppy disks, for 500 Austrian Schilling (~40€ without inflation). Great times!

Yeah, it's one thing to say that it is mind-blowing to think back thirty years and imagine that the consoles you played back then would still be on display at a video-gaming convention. However, what blows my mind is how in thirty years it will be a miracle if the consoles we currently have (or are about to have) will still be on display for two reasons. The first being simple longevity, or product life. They simply do not make them as they once did. My older systems still going strong, but the consoles I've owned over the past two decades have been repaired numerous times. Regardless, the second reason is what really pisses me off, and that being corporate greed, which leads to wanting more control. They want more control by various attempts to change laws around in various countries so that even though we purchase their product to use in the privacy of our own homes, they are framing the law to reflect that consumers do not legally own the products which they paid to own. We are not allowed to repair the product ourselves, and they are also pushing that legitimate third party businesses have no authorization to work/repair the product neither, and we are not allowed to modify the product in anyway, and if we do, then they have the legal right to ban us from going online and using any of their servers, or even outright bricking the devices that we paid for!!! We're not even allowed to open the devices up, and penalty for doing so goes much farther than merely voiding its warranty! However, the main issue is how they want to make their console systems 100% digital with no physical media available for them, all in the name of increasing their bottom lines. Today's youth are ignorant and simply just want to play their games, they know not what they do by willingly, and eagerly, accepting the transition over to an all digital gaming future, but that is how they will be able to pull this crime off. No more reselling your games you never play anymore, or trading them in towards the purchase of some other game. No trading games with your friends. No beautiful displays of your game library. No guarantee how long a game will be playable on the system. Obviously it will be a problem with those games that require a server to play, they will have the legal right to shut down these servers at any given time, which you agreed to in the fine print upon purchasing said game. The game might be playable for five years, or two, maybe only one, or it could legally be only a few months, although surely that would actually cause too much backlash, although the transition to all digital is barely garnering a whimper. Even some physical copies of games currently already have problems. Think about it, over the past decade or so, what usually happens when you purchase a physical copy of a brand new game, you take it home, stick it in your gaming console, and then what? Although it is a brand new game, what is the typical occurrence? You have to wait for it to download an update (BRAND NEW GAME), before it is playable!!! You stumble across a game you have always wanted to play, but you didn't have a system at the time, and it is already four years old, or maybe it was a foreign released game, not available here, and you could never find a copy at a reasonable price . . . but you finally did, and now you own a copy of a game that you are totally excited to play. You pop it into your system only to discover it isn't playable because there is nowhere from whence to download the update it needs to be playable because they cease the support for the game. So, you can pretty much forget about playing digital games thirty years later!!!!

Obviously this arcade had all the old faves like the 1p 2p 10p coin drops, a bingo set up for oldies, and all the faves like space invader, pacman, donkey Kong, dig dug etc. A glorious time all the more special once atari bought them onto the 2600 and we had just enough imagination to think they were like the arcade versions til summer came and we saw the real ones again and were reminded how superior they were…😮😂

Sega attack 2 i never saw this in the flesh but how glorious…I did actually play a handful of mechanicals in 79/80 in a portacabin of old arcade games on a camp called didleys in Snettisham Norfolk (next to hunstanton). Down the road was a more modern arcade on the corner next to Fish n chip shop (still open to this day) and it housed modern beauty's like zaxxon, pole position, spy hunter, chase hq, operation wolf, star wars, kung fu master (at differing years) along with a row of old penny games where u dropped a coin from above and attempted to have it drop onto ledges of pay outs of 2,3, 5 etc pennies..it also had at times the old early 80s like crossbow, and the cowboy 2player etc..happy times.

I can’t believe how he pronounced the greatest boxer ever’s name. He did not even know who he was by how he just talked about the pinball machine and not the legend Muhammad Ali! 🤦🏽

I had a Commodore 64, Atari 2600, and Atari 5200. The 5200 was my personal favorite. A friend had Intellivision that he ruled Burger Time on. As cool as they were, my PS5 is pretty badass for a console.

The narrative where one chooses which situations are somehow germ pits but others aren’t is frustrating. You cou,d have caught your bug anywhere, say in a restaurant. We need to let go of the fear and the pathetic masks.

The look on your face when drinking that 'coffee' was a lesson in classic British understatement . You managed to do all the things they wanted of you unimpeachably but still look like you'd rather drink your own ** . That was a masterful .
