Ruthenia which existed as an independent nation for one day. It declared independence on March 15, 1939 and was annexed the next day by Hungary. It was also called the Republic of Carpatho-Ukraine.

Even though Prussia, Bavaria… United under the German empire they still maintained their parliaments, monarchs police forces… their inhabitants also maintained a strong regional patriotism so referring to them as nations still following 1871 isn't completely wrong

JJ mentions the Papal States at 18:54. Another reason they may be listed is due to the Pope. After he was defeated by Italy in 1870, he refused to accept the Italian state. Maybe they could have been some chart/map makers who agreed with him.

2:12 I like how these "giant empires" are just colony cities really far away, but there's nothing between them and the core of the empire but tribal peoples with small villages, so they obviously don't count it's all ours.

The Papal States were dissolved but it's sovereign Holy See, to whom ambassadors etc were sent, still exists and now rules over the independent Vatican City State. San Marino also persists as an independent pre-unification polity.

As a someone born in Hawaii, I can say that there are still some of us who believe that we are an independent nation that is just under the occupation of a larger power, my grandfather held this belief and was very prominent on the legal and historical documents that defined it as such. As history shows us nothing is permanent and that truth and reconciliation can lead to world changes we will see eventual resurgence of political autonomy on the world stage.

In Peru we have an old sayin': "ni en la China ni en la Conchinchina" used to talk about a outlandish stuff from a far, far away place. It's mostly used by old people tho. Pretty cool to get to know the origins
