The UNCOMFORTABLE truth about IRON MAIDEN’s new film
Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition is finally out. And after watching it, I realized that it was definitely not what I expected from it.
As expected, this film is not really concentrating on any specific given era of Iron Maiden, but rather covers the entire history of this band. But not really, because if you think about it, it actually covers only specific, most important moments of Iron Maiden’s history, and is in fact much more broad, general, and way less nerdy than, for example, the History of Iron Maiden series or most of the videos which I release in our Up the Iron series on this video. Which is absolutely okay, ’cause I guess it would be pretty much impossible to fit the entire 50-year long history of Iron Maiden, one of the greatest heavy metal bands on the planet, into a short two-hour long film. We were playing locally around East London. It started to snowball for us. But at the same time, even if we put that aside, there was still a couple of rather strange choices that the film crew came up with, which I feel like I kinda want to share with you.

Remember, the stories recalled by band members can be rather inconsistent… Any band. Sometimes even THEY can't remember who was fired or who quit or what happened during pivotal moments of their career. Band members r human … and humans can be rather inconsistent…
Motley Crue still can't agree whether singer Vince Neil quit or got fired in 1992.
Van Halen still won't address what led to singer David Lee Roth parting ways w/ the band in 1985.
Power metal band Gamma Ray first claimed that original singer Ralph Scheepers was auditioning to replaced Rob Halford of Judas Priest in the mid-90's, which is why they parted ways w/ him by 1994… Ralph Scheepers claims he never auditioned for Judas Priest … Later, Gamma Ray amended their claims, stating that Scheepers was living apart from the band. So, logistics (and possibly finances) led to the singer parting ways.
A band is a business… and Iron Maiden is no exception. There was controversy w/ the song "Charlotte the Harlot"… credited to Dave Murray only; we all know that Murray doesn't write lyrics. Later, former Maiden vocalist Dennis Wilcock claimed that HE wrote the lyrics but was never credited…
We all know about the lawsuit regarding credits to the signature Maiden song "Hallowed be thy name"…
The Ozzfest '05 fiasco w/ Sharon Osbourne… It was Bruce Dickinson who instigated negative comments about Ozzy Osbourne from the stage to the point where Steve Harris actually went to Ozzy and apologized ("Sorry about our singer…") before the egging and power-cutting incident at Maiden's last Ozzfest stop… Many bands on that tour openly stated that Bruce Dickinson was openly berating Ozzy on that tour and Sharon had had enough… Bruce Dickinson even became irate onstage towards fans recently for 'smoking the grass' while they performed (Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed commented to Dickinson on social media, "Is there anything that doesn't p+++ you off?")
Let's look at splits w/ singers… Van Halen for example – everybody thought for years that David Lee Roth became egotistical and quit Van Halen for a solo career in 1985 … Roth claimed that "too much s+++ had gone down between them"… There were problems on that 1984 Van Halen tour; Roth was always drunk and barely singing onstage… The other members were no better off and each started solo-ing longer during the band's set.
At the end of a tour, singer David Lee Roth usually went away to do his own thing, while Eddie Van Halen worked on new music in his studio… Eddie also began writing more on keyboards and Roth hated keyboard-heavy songs (He refused to sing on the track "Jump" for years)
When Roth heard the new music, he became difficult (It was a process to get Roth to write lyrics and sing on a new track) and Eddie Van Halen became frustrated… Months went by and suddenly, Van Halen learned that David Lee Roth had recorded a solo EP "Crazy from the heat" in 1985 (mostly cover songs) and was looking to MTV to promote it… Roth wanted to make a movie "Crazy from the heat" w/ him as the star.
From what I gather from later accounts, Eddie and his brother Alex Van Halen (drums) were furious at Roth's solo endeavors and fired the singer that year… David Lee Roth was taken aback and retaliated by shifting Van Halen's crew and management to work for him and launch his solo career in 1986.
Van Halen was lucky to find singer Sammy Hagar in '85 who loved the new music Eddie Van Halen was writing and signed on as the new singer of Van Halen in 1986.
Many of the real incidents behind the scenes of Van Halen were kept secret for decades before the full story came out and didn't fit past narratives.
With Iron Maiden and Paul Di'Anno, we all know that Di'Anno was struggling on tour and was burnt out on drugs and alcohol during the "Killers" world tour in 1981 (He did admit he was self-destructing on the road) … Even Dave Murray recalled seeing Di'Anno backstage wishing out loud that he could go home… Remember, drummer Doug Sampson also quit Iron Maiden in 1979 because he couldn't handle the heavy schedule of recording and touring that was coming up in 1980, stretching for months… Sampson felt that Maiden needed someone who could handle the rigors of touring, which led to drummer Clive Burr joining.
We know that tour dates had to be canceled because Paul Di'Anno had lost his voice by the Fall of '81… I can assume that parting ways w/ Paul Di'Anno was a mutual decision – he wanted less responsibility and less pressure to perform and tour… Iron Maiden needed a singer who could handle their career ambitions. Di'Anno himself said he never regretted the decision to leave Iron Maiden but initially thought it wouldn't work w/ a new singer… However, he did praise Bruce Dickinson as the singer of Iron Maiden.
It all comes down to business w/ bands…
Also, remember that Paul Di'Anno had a very 'punk' attitude… He had this "don't-give-a-f+++" mentality that got him in trouble throughout his life… Di'Anno said that he wasn't keen on joining Iron Maiden as the singer, even after he was hired but heard their music and knew they were special and wanted to be a part of it… He also admitted he wasn't as active contributing lyrics as Steve Harris would have wanted him to be.
I read Blaze Bayley recalling his being fired from Iron Maiden and he wasn't bitter about it – he understood, even though it hurt his ego, I'm sure… because Iron Maiden was selling poorly in the 90's and not making money on the road… Blaze could feel that Maiden fans were not on his side when he performed w/ the band but he hoped for the best… It didn't help that Blaze was losing his voice on tour trying to sing Bruce Dickinson's songs and shows had to be canceled as a result.
Remember, Maiden's 1998 album "Virtual XI" became their worst-selling record and they couldn't even be on tour for a year as offers from promoters had dried up by the end of '98… Blaze said that he remembered that tour Iron Maiden did in '98 w/ Dio; he felt 'wrong' that a legendary singer like Ronnie James Dio was opening for his band … Steve Harris was content w/ Blaze on vocals but band morale on tour was at an all-time low.
They had spoken to Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith while they toured together in Bruce's solo band and they were going broke … Bruce Dickinson said he was happy creatively… but financially, he was wiped out by 1998 and couldn't maintain his solo career.
From what I read, Steve Harris loved the albums "The X factor" and "Virtual XI"… because he was the producer and it was the first time he could make Iron Maiden albums exactly how he wanted them without interference from an outside source… But the fans didn't see it his way. Harris (reportedly) wanted to make a third Maiden album w/ Blaze Bayley but it wasn't possible financially – the fans wanted Bruce Dickinson back and Harris (who had to be convinced by managers) had to compromise his ambitions if Iron Maiden was to continue.
A band is a business… and Iron Maiden was no different.
Bruce Dickinson recalled getting an offer to reunite w/ Iron Maiden (Adrian Smith included) in early 1999 and his guitarist Roy Z allegedly encouraged him when Bruce hesitated, "Are you crazy? Go! I'll see you later!"
Blaze Bayley said he thought a third Iron Maiden would help fans accept him as the band's singer but he recalled being called into a meeting w/ the band's management and told somberly that he was no longer needed in Iron Maiden – changes had to be made… He asked if Bruce Dickinson was coming back to Iron Maiden and they admitted as much… So, Blaze left respectfully. He has never badmouthed Iron Maiden and says he still keeps in touch w/ Steve Harris.

I think you're right. You shouldn't go see this movie expecting a documentary. It's more like a homage to Maiden from a fan and that's why Steve wasn't at the premiere because, although he was interviewed, it wasn't a "product" of Maiden. Although, it was great to see Maiden at the movie theater and to see new fans emerge from watching this film and to keep Maiden alive. I know that I will continue listening to their music long after they've wrapped things up, but it is great to see new fans. I still consider them to be an "underground" band, so, to be in a room with like minded people is a great thrill! 🤘😜💖 Up the Irons! 🤘🧟♀️

From what you say it sounds like a 2-hour trailer for the band. I might give it a miss; mostly because I hate historical inaccuracies (aka lies!). Anyway you reminded me I still need to buy the History of Iron Maiden series parts 2 and 3.

The film was absolutely fantastic! A lot of footage I had never seen before. Apparently it was supposed to be a Netflix series but they ended up having to put it all into this one film.

It was fun to watch in the cinema, there wasn't a sinlge new fact or new bit of audio / footage that i hadn't already seen / heard, but i knew that before i went anyway.

I can agree with some of your comments, but I feel it was primarily targeted for the newer younger fans which explains why it didn’t go in-depth and into specifics stories like us older fans are aware of.
I noticed about half the attendees were younger or with their parents. Either way, a true fan will support ANYTHING Maiden shares with us.
Dig your show. Keep up the good work 🤘😎

At the beginning I can kind of understand what you're saying but then the faster you spoke with your accent the less I can understand. There was a part where you said sorry if there were spoilers and that whole part I could not understand so there was no spoilers for me. So the main thing I got from this whole episode of yours is that there's an Iron Maiden movie coming out.😅😅😅😅

I just watched it. I think its impossible to cover everything in a cinema film so they did a good job. The parts from the Lebanon fan and Javier Bardem were very moving. I hope you are not jealous because you werent invited on to it ( joking) but seriously i would have liked to see you on it, you are a very big fan and do a great job , also forza Ukraine.

I know the inconsistencies in the bigger picture don't matter too much , it does show a sloppy nature when it comes to the editing , something Steve Harris shouldn't be too pleased with as he is a perfectionist and rightly so

But the big question is: Where were Steve Harris and Janick Gers during the film's world premiere?

It's a two-hour movie, they have 50 years of history. Even four hours would not have been enough time. Just enjoy it for what it is.

it was all over the place chronologically, crippling bad choices for the interviewedcelebs, no wonder Steve walked away and no showed at the premier.

It seems to be made for new audiences and not the fans that’s has been with them forever. It was ok. The official biography was better. History of maiden past one and two and even the documentary at the end of 9 wasted years was better. It’s a different perspective that leaves out a lot of names that was so influential to the band. Martin birch and Derek Riggs comes to mind and many more. Whoever decided to write this didn’t write it from a fan perspective but a sanitized version of the band. Shame. They could have done a lot more and certainly didn’t need to be released in the theatre. They could have just added as a second disc to their next dvd Blu-ray release

I am terribly disappointed that the show only played in one théâtre here in Nova Scotia and on one night. I dont understand why. I was not able to get to the show as it was quite far away from where I live. I think it sucks that it isnt playing to a more wide open list if venues.

I saw it it last night. I agree with some comments. It's not totally historically accurate about the history. It's a movie about Iron Maiden and their fans. US! It's a celebration of Iron Maiden and their legacy. Their contribution to heavy metal music
That's it. Why question the unimportant details about the movie. Go see the movie while you have a chance. Maiden forever! "Up the irons"

There have been some somewhat inaccurate assumptions made about the great Iron Maiden with the Burning Ambition movie but for me the documentary was a triumph and does represent over 50 years of the Iron Maiden legacy. It was wonderful to see a section acknowledging the great work that Blaze Bayley did in keeping Iron Maiden going when key members decided to leave the band. He did bring a unique set of new material that was unique in it's own right. While not having the vocal ability of Paul Di'anno or Bruce Dickinson he did bring his own unique vocal style and some interesting song ideas. I was appalled that Iron Maiden fans would actually spit at the poor guy. That was seriously poor form and beyond disrespectful. I'd actually hoped a few years ago that Di'Anno, Dickinson and Bayley could have formed a power trio together for a tour, but alas that can never happen now since Paul has passed away. Nicko did not want to leave the band, he felt he had no choice and did what he felt was best for the band. For the record, he is still part of Iron Maiden and if they decide to make another album will no doubt be part of that creation. Add to that, WHAT A LEGEND!!! He had a stroke, had to teach himself to drum all over again and still went on one final tour. Amazing. Simon Dawson was in large part selected by Nicko and he wouldn't have allowed someone who didn't respect Iron Maiden into the role. I hope Nicko and Simon can work together if they decide to create a new album, that would be extra special. Looking forward to hearing Simon on the new tour. For Nicko it's simply that he feels his body can no longer handle the tours and after 40+ years I'd ask all fans to be fare and accept time takes it's toll. The final message was not a doom and gloom at all but a triumph of the human spirit in this movie. Steve declared he wants to keep on touring until he is unable to do so anymore. That's amazing considering all the ups and downs but clearly shows he is still as committed to Iron Maiden now as when he started the band all those years ago playing at the St Nicholas Hall in Poplar London and the now legendary Cart and Horses pub in Maryland London. Essentially fellow fans, Iron Maiden has absolutely nothing left to prove, they make music now because it's their love and passion and they love performing for us fans. That magic has never died and they are an absolute inspiration. Add to that the music is epic and eternal. It just keeps getting better and better as the years tick on. One of the greatest aspects of Iron Maiden for me is that its us fans who have made them one of the greatest rock bands in the world bar none. We did it by spreading the word and Iron Maiden did it by continuing to create and play concerts for everyone. Looking forward to the Run For Your Lives Tour and am crossing my fingers for an exciting new album. ROCK ON IRON MAIDEN!!!!!!!!

I first saw iron Maiden in the Cart & Horses pub in Stratford East London in June 1976. I was 21. My old school mate ( Ruckholt Manor School ) Paul Day was making his singing debut that night, and i didn't even know he could sing. Paul Dianno was an old friend of mine too. he lived in a tower block in Oliver Road Leyton, just 10 mins from my house. Great days!!!🤩
