After the success of Robotech, Harmony Gold tried again because, you know, why not?

The grabbed the rights to Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Queen Millennia on the cheap and attempted to mash them together like they did with Robotech.

Thus, Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years was born and… well…

Explains so much. Watched it on Channel 11 in Dallas, TX. Taped the series over the summer and a power outage killed the last episode. Still have the VHS tapes. Galaxy 999 was the best for this character.
    Thanks for what you do!

I watched the show when it aired in the '80s, right along with Robotech. I thank Macek for what he did. We'd have never gotten it or had to wait until much later, after the mainstream-a-fication of anime to see it at all, since the '81 video release was very incomplete. But, plot twist, it was in no small way because of Macek and what he did that anime got that mainstream push.

Macek was the hero we needed at the time, while in retrospect, based on how revisionists and later, naive benefactors, I guess we didn't deserve one at all.

I grew up in Northern Ontario Canada.

I only watched the french versions of Harlock called "Albator", and the soundtrack was the most mindblowing electronic soundtrack (By composer Eric Charden) I have ever heard.

The women plant creatures were called the "Sylvid" not the "Mazone". "Sylvie" was a very common french name for women, and I could remember many of us thinking these girls were alien spies (I think we were correct).

When I finally rented the original Japanese with the karaoke bluesy ballad soundtrack, I couldn't believe how ROBBED people were not listening to the vastly superior/moody french Eric Charden soundtrack.

I later read the major cultural hit Albator was to the french it was even called "Generation Albator".

If you haven't heard the french version: TRUST ME, you are in for a treat. it's the BEST.

It did air in 2004 one last time, 1 person did upload it, but the torrent was dead. They listed a dvd on their site but no one has it and when asked no one seems to know anything about the listing. I hope someone can find the 2004 rip

Captain Harlock Was to be in Star Blazers , But that anime, great as it is was very pro Military industrial complex. They did fight over Captain Harlock role with both not willing to come to a middle a ground, leading to the Annie we got with harlock.

I turned on Nickelodeon one day at a hotel when I was traveling with my family when I was about 6 years old and I saw something that looked a lot like Captain Harlock on screen! You've unlocked one of my hidden memories! I love your channel so much! The story of Captain Harlock is amazing! I'm going to look him up again in the future! Thanks so much for making this video!

I guess I can't post pictures here, and I don't know who to email. Not sure if I can even post a link. I will post the photos of the Captain Harlock Beta tape somewhere and post a link.

I love how the Japanese promos are always enthusiastic and full of life, and the English language ones always seem to be done with the attitude of, "I dunno, I just got this copy handed to me, it's some friggin cartoon or something."

very few of the imported anime of the era were shown in the market region i grew up in because deep south texas sucked like that. i actually bought a diecast sdf macross from a random store because i recognized it as the macross in spite of it being called 'zor' on the packaging. it transformed to the 'mech' version but tuned out to be sadly fragile for a diecast toy from that era. voltron lion/cars and starblazers aired and maybe a few eps of harlock but only battle for the planets and speed racer, both much older properties had been aired prior to robotech and transformers competed with robotech which suffered schedule shifting so badly after character deaths that i never have been able to watch the entire series i saw all of the original macross, i think i saw all of southern cross bu may not have and i know i missed several eps of the invid saga including the series ending. i could probably track them all down now but with all i know now the feeling isnt the same and only a few eps of any of the series hold enduring nostalgia i might give it a try again but only if the entire thing was available for free, i didnt pay to watch it the first go round not gonna do so decades after the fact,

No wonder I like the streamline pictures dub of dirty pair flight 005 conspiracy better than the other ones.
That's crazy. It's because the studio is founded by someone who genuinely loves the plots of the originals

Glenn Danzig was a fan of Captain Harlock way before the Harmony Gold wackiness aired. He used to use his skull and crossbones symbol as a personal logo way back in the the late 70s and early 80s, before the Misfits broke up in 1983. By the time he put his Sam Hain project together, he had switched to the demon skull he copied from a comic book. He kept that logo after Sam Hain had transitioned into the band Danzig.
Glenn was into anime and manga way before it became a trend in the 80s. I don't know if and how he saw the shows before VCRs were widespread.

I wish the original Queen Millennia series was available on home-video, so that we could see the complete story as it was meant to be seen. (QM was always the more interesting story to me anyway, in my never-to-be-humble opinion.) I saw the "Queen Milliennia" movie the other day & it was quite good; the ending in particular was quite moving, very sad… Anyhow I for one wish they'd release that on Blu Ray or something someday; I'd much rather see that than most of the modern Anime' frankly. (How many 'slice of life' stories set in high school do we have to endure anyway?)

I was able to watch it. The same channel in Houston Tx that broadcast Robotech, played this version of Harlock for a while…. Im not sure for how long. In the fall of 85 we moved to Austin for a short stint. Austin stations were not playing Robotech or Harlock during the time that we lived there. When we moved back to Houston only a few short months later, Harlock was gone….. Robotech was still showing.

I had no idea about any of this! As a kid I had a bootleg copy of the first VHS tape along with a bunch of other bootlegs, all bought while on vacation in Malaysia. Watched it a million times as a kid and even bought a model of the ship when I came to Japan.

8:20 Having this old man interview Carl about Robotech is messing with the part of my mind that keeps stereotypes encased in concrete. Oh well, kid cartoons weren’t free entertainment, they were businesses.

So rather have access to several different shows and air them as wanted, just butcher them all, then reassemble the mess into something else and go with that? Sounds pretty dumb. This does make me want to watch the originals, though.

This was my 1st experience of Captain Herlock when my Pop was stationed in California back in the mid 80s. The problem that I had back then that it was broadcasted from another town, so the reception was barely clear and extremely fuzzy, and the sound was no better. And it was dubbed in Spanish, which I did not understand, nor speak it.

GenX here and I just needed to say, well done for this episode. A huge amount of poignant detail from such a crazy time. I feel both scarred for life and grateful that I got to see it all unfold.

I remember in the 90s, Queen Millenia was shown in TV for sometime, but was the Japanese version, because it had still japanese opening and ending. I think Captain Harlock was also shown alongside, but not for long. Next time I saw something similar to Captain Harlock, was when Daft Punk released the video for One More Time, I remember thinking to myself…"Huh! Those aliens look a lot like Captain Harlock and Queen Millenia"…I wasn't too far off, and I would dare to say that Interstella 5555 does sort of look like it happens in Captain Harlock universe, but might be my imagination.
And yes, if you are wondering, sometimes in Mexico and I presume in Latinamerica, we would get animes dubbed to Spanish but the openings and endings were still in their original Japanese. The ones I remember like that were Transformers Victory and The Secret Garden….which by the way, I prefer the anime version of The Secret Garden than any live action adaptation but if I had to say which live action adaptation I like the best, is the 1993 movie, but the anime version is far superior to that movie and that movie is probably far superior to any other live action adaptation.

The San Francisco Bay Area had channel 26 with a consistant supply of Japanese content in the 80s. It's one of the reasons I'm in Japan now. Such an impressionable preadolescent mind and maybe the servant of programming choices in the offices of television execs!

Robotech was awesome. I just happened to wake up early the day the first episode premiered here in Jacksonville. I caught it most mornings but would always be really depressed if I got up a half hour late. 😂

Interesting.. YAY WLVI 56! – i remember we got robotech somehow i did see harlock here as well as of course starblazers and such.. i actually have good memories of all of them. and they all influenced me to this day in one way or another. I seemed to have taken the good parts of them. In addition 25 had the Force Five stuff as well.. related Danguard Ace – Those death screams of the aliens dying in harlock i can still hear now! .. creepy! – its funny.. i could tell from your reactions and some of the videos you chose and such.. you must have been a local! –

I remember watching these a couple of times when I was a kid. Known as "La princesa de los mil años" (Princess of a Thousand Years) here in Mexico, it was shown as schedule filler on Saturday morning cartoons… I thought it was boring and confusing.

I'm late in the conversation, but I can tell you that Captain Harlock was MASSIVE in France and in Québec back when I was a child. He had been rechristened Albator because the French network didn't want him to be confused with Haddock, or something. I was born in the late 70s, I was a child in the 80s and with Grendizer and Harlock was one of the most beloved anime of the time.
