The Secret Subplot You Missed In Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary

Looper | April 20, 2026

“Project Hail Mary” follows one man and one five-legged alien on their quest to save the universe, but there’s more to the story than just interstellar action. According to directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, one of the film’s most missable details doesn’t have to do with space at all.

I was gonna give this movie a pass but now I found out that the author has declared modern Star Trek shit. I’ll be seeing it in the cinema. That’s my expression of support.

I loved the book and the movie. I was so glad they added the Stratt scene on the ship at the end. One of the most disappointing parts of the book was not getting closure on Stratt, but did not weaken the book IMO.

Fun fact, although they tweaked the carrier from being Chinese to US in the film, All scenes were filmed on and old ferry and active Royal Navy ship in the UK. The karaoke scene was filmed in the officers mess which is far more civilised than on a US ship as they have a proper bar 🙂

It is not Ryan Goslings Project Hail Mary. It is Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's Project Hail Mary. Why is everyone screwing over the directors??? Did Ryan adlib the movie??? No. So it isn't his movie. Please give credit where it is due.

In the book the artic scene was some time after he arrives on the jet. They had to buy earth time now while Hail Mary was being built in orbit. Then she gets the tattoo after the Hail Mary is on course to Tau Ceti because at that point they didnt know if it worked and the world needing a "whipping boy", eva to take the heat of having all the power to create Hail Mary. 10/10 movie. 11/10 book. read the book for 1000x more detail
