Thundarr the Barbarian was, by some accounts, Ruby and Spears favorite show they worked on as is evidenced by the number of times they tried to save it.
Riding the wave of Star Wars and predicting the popularity of Conan the Barbarian they couldn’t keep Thundarr on the air long enough to be swept up in the pop culture wake of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Thundarr taught shows like He-Man and G.I. Joe to tack on PSAs so that the studio could argue that it was more than just violence for kids.

This show was esoteric for me. It was always there and I never seemed to catch a whole episode. It was mind-boggling the way they merged fantasy and post apocalyptic scifi always had a weird draw for me. Same for the Spelljammer D&D setting, it was this fringe thing I never truly got to enjoy. Now I think I'll go watch it.

Thundarr was the like the early version of He-Man then two years later He-Man comes to years later his sister She -Ra follows.
Myself and my younger cousin have always been fans of action figure cartoons throughout the 80s.

Idk why these companies get rid of the actually good shows and keep crap that no one wants it happens all the timeā¦. Especially with cartoons like reboot the centurions the Hercules Jonny quest darkwing duck tale spin and so on
@charliedolengewicz2400
February 10, 2026 at 5:10 pm
Thundarr should have stayed instead of those cartoon spinoffs that no one wanted

A lot of Adventure Time reminds of Thundarr. It's why I like Adventure Time. I wish there was a crossover. It would be easy.

"Let's get rid of the awesome & imaginative fantastical cartoon able to uphold any crazy plot we can come up with for…. cartoon versions of live action shows.." fkken stupid.
Like I mentioned below someone else's comment, I now really want Jackson Public & Doc Hammer to make Venture Bros-like parody, preferably directly re-imagining actual Thundarr the way Space Ghost & Birdman got refreshed, but just a generic parody scifi barbarian show would be fantastic too. (Hell anything from those two would be worth celebrating in my book.)

Really feels like Thundarr walked so He-Man could runā¦but itās pretty easy to say, back then, it probably felt more like Thundarr was too early to the party, and left just before things really got started.

Even though I religiously watched Saturday morning cartoons at that time, I somehow managed to miss Thundarr.
I may well be the only person on the planet who can make that claim.

Iād find out years later that TTB was created by Steve Gerber, my favorite comics writer in my teen years, with Howard the Duck! I never noticed the studio-imposed censorship ā for a Barbarian, he wasnāt even allowed to throw a punch!
āThe big thing that weāve had to overcome is that the censors tend to treat children as if theyāre not just morons, but lunatics, potentially dangerous creatures.ā ā SG

I remember an episode of Thundarr where they had to go to Manhatt and right there on the screen they showed the World trade towers , abandoned but still intact. This was a few years after 9/11. I was taken back. I loved the series

Used to rage on Saturdays!! Thundarr was the last cartoon in the line-up and it was almost ALWAYS preempted by wrestling! I finally gave up on watching it which was a shame because the cartoon was so dang entertaining! Still hate wrestling to this day! šš¤£
