Water is truth. Earth, water, air, fire…baptism is immersion in the waters of truth. This is influenced by the intermingling of cultures at the time, heavily influenced by Greek. And now we have people dunking themselves in tubs of water thinking they are “saved”. You are to immerse yourselves WITHIN in the waters of truth

Could it be that Jesus turned John in to authorities resulting in his execution. John forgave jesus' sin, then when events came around Jesus found himself in the position of John and knew his time was limited. When Judas a follower of John turns Jesus in as justice, Jesus knew it was inevitable given what he had done, and so forgives Judas just as John had forgiven him. By sending all the followers forward with the same role Jesus prevented a repeate and ensured their message would continue.

John was to proclaims the resurrected Christ as a kingdom, coming to reside in men’s spirit make men’s as God, but not as a deity. But, because his coming about proclaim a repentance gospel, God turn to another way and has him in a situation to be end.

Alex says "When Elizabeth is pregnant she goes to meet Mary" … no… Mary knows Elizabeth is 6 months pregnant and goes to meet Elizabeth in the hills 5 days walk 80 miles, for 3 months probably therefore there to assist birthing JtB before heading off and winding up in Bethlehem 6 months later. AND you fail to mention Elizabeth's greater reverence for Jesus in the womb than for her own John. And for her reverence to Mary… the hierarchy of greatness is obvious from the beginning. If you think this is dubious biblical narrative really why do you believe the bits that fit your counter narrative?
And the reverence of Jesus continues with the "not fit to untie his sandals" "preparing the way" ….
Likely Jesus also spent time with John in childhood (that is mostly ignored or dismissed… focusing on their last years in their 30s) maybe together in exile, we know how Jesus was teaching even at 12 years old in the temple, probably earlier to family friends…. John would have learned and probably taken his mission from Christ hence his reluctance to baptise his master for whom he was preparing the way.
Also of all the authorities on JtB and JC surely those that followed both would be the best source… and so why decline Apostle Johns view who wrote on it?
Remember also John lived with Mary as his adoptive mother … who knew both John and Jesus better than any.
I don't think these revisionists enamoured more than anything with "wow factor" and perhaps with its saleability, are adding anything here. Although it's interesting and fun.
Re baptism, clearly it was a tradition and we know Mary and Jesus adhered to Jewish tradition and law. Perhaps it was controversial to do so in the Jordan rather than under authorised practices in baptismal locations/buildings but we know Jesus challenged the leadership whilst respecting the tradition
The idea JtB is a hidden character in Christianity is laughable. He's huge in the Church…. so many churches even carry his name! We love St JtB , he's right up there with the most mysterious character St Joseph, so this is not troubling; only this confused interpretation is strange.
Re Mathew 11:11… Jesus we know later said he was not of this kingdom. So he's not included under the earth "born of women" comment which means in the eyes of Christ JtB is the greatest of earths kingdom earth born men. Jesus is of heaven and eternal in his eyes when he says this.

This is why Judas did what he did, he was originally a disciple of John the Baptist, when John was in prison he asked his disciples to go follow Christ, but Judas loved John and never felt for Christ the way he did for John
You cannot serve two masters, for you will love the one, and hate the other…

Well, according to saying number 46 in the gospel of Thomas, John the baptizer was a great man that people should not turn away from. It then told us we can be greater than him if we realise what we really are. Possibly implying that for all his greatness, John may not have truly understood what he was.

I love JtB. As a Catholic I have a bit more reverence for the Saints than other Christians. He dedicated his life to God purely on faith. He leaped in the womb when his mother was near Mary. He lived in the wilderness like a wild man, washing away sins in the name of God. We actually know a ton about him. He was incredible.

I noticed a slight discrepancy whilst I was reading my Bible (maybe it's just me being dumb): at some point in the story, Jesus says to someone 'pick up your cross and follow me'. What is the significance of the cross at this point in the story? The cross represents Jesus' crucifixion and had no significance while he was alive.

The whole thing about baptism makes me wonder why the ritual? Near as I can figure it is a reference to the flood. The flood, in this case, being a metaphor for how God chose Israel. It says something about God. Yahweh is like Noah. Israel is Yahweh's ark. The coming of John coincides with the time referenced by end of the flood. Israel, the ark, was almost over. That's why the kingdom of heaven is at hand preaching. Something else was coming. I talk about this sort of thing, but with reference to much more over on my channel, @granduniversal. It's especially good for those who are thinking about deconstructing. I can show you some things that will push you.

Water baptism, dying and Rising god, resurrection, judgment day, is all Egyptian religion. It all comes from Egypt just like Jesus who is the Egyptian referred to in the Bible and John the Baptist, it all comes from Egypt

Never ever ever trust an "academic" that cannot and will not pronounce words correctly. It isn't mand-eye- ns. It isn't man-dye-ans. It is man-dE-ans. There is a pronunciation key in each and ever dictionary on the planet. Miss pronouncing words does not make one special, more intelligent, smart, etc. It makes you WRONG. Also, why are ppl giving this guy money for repeating what tribal tent dwellers have said for centuries. He isn't coming up with anything new. He hasn't discovered anything new. He isn't revealing anything. He's just repeating that which always was.

Could the one coming after for John be the son of man? Jesus also speaks of the coming of the son of man and part of the gospel tradition still appears to indicate a person yet to come who is not Jesus. Perhaps John and Jesus both believed that the last to come would be this son of man? 23:29

I am jewish. And I'm doing a Bible study thing for being social at work and two of my coworkers are doing their own Bible study. Of course we started with John and we are now talking about John the Baptist.
I don't know anything about christology or you know the the scholarly understanding of the Gospels anything past you know some videos I've seen with Bart ehrman or here on this channel.
Through this Bible study I was considering what the purpose of the book of John was for. It seems like the Gospel of John has a different purpose than the synoptic Gospels. Before listening to this video I just thought that it was there to tell people reading the book that the Jews who didn't follow Jesus were wrong and that doubting Thomas was like a singular person to latch on to as an example of the group The Jewish group that doesn't believe in Jesus. Now that I'm listening to this I realize also that there's another group that they are talking to and that is the people who are followers of John the Baptist. They are saying he is not the way. Even John the Baptist himself says that Jesus is the way.
Now also as I'm learning this from the perspective of Judaism and of course the baptism is very similar to the mikvah.
When you talked about how he's exemplified as John the Baptist and why would you exemplify that if mikvah ritual was common kind of like he wouldn't say Liam from Scotland in Scotland because that kind of wouldn't narrow things down. I think that's absolutely the wrong example. So if you said you know John the mall or John the butcher… To me that makes more sense. The question that I have is is John doing mikvah dunking differently than was traditionally done at the time and our modern Jews doing the mikvah like was done in the first century? That's the question that jumps into my mind.
Another thing that I'd like to discuss is just the concept of what a messiah is and what it was thought of at the time. So you know apparently there are more than one messiah in the Hebrew Bible. There are different types of Messiah.
Where is the Messiah that people talk about and they are only talking about the the king Messiah that supposed to be coming from the House of David. There's another Messiah that is supposed to be the hair herolder/proclaimer of the actual king of David Messiah, Elijah from the house Joseph. There are more but for the purposes of this discussion (I hope I remembered that accurately).
It seems to me and I think I've also seen it sad that some people think that John the Baptist was the haroldor Messiah and that Jesus was the king Messiah.. there is also another Messiah from the house of Aaron who is a priestly Messiah. King Cyrus was also considered a non-jewish messiah…
Well what my point is the Gospel of John had a purpose. The purpose was plainly stated in the text that Jesus is the messiah here why. The synoptic gospels are not so clearly written like that. I am not an expert I've just you know heard people talking on different videos and I've read a little bit and that's it so obviously you guys know way more than I do but I also have the context of being Jewish but even with that I'm not an expert.
I would love some feedback with this and I will continue watching this video til the end. Thank you.
