“During World War II, Japanese Special Attack Units (特別攻撃隊, tokubetsu kōgeki tai, often abbreviated to 特攻隊 tokkōtai), also called shimbu-tai, were specialized units of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Imperial Japanese Army normally used for doomed missions. They included kamikaze aircraft, fukuryu frogmen, and several types of boats and submarines.
Weapons similar in effect to these self-destructing weapons are used today by modern militaries, though as drones or otherwise automated rather than human-guided. Notable example is loitering munitions, which are popularly known as kamikaze drones.”

A lot of people don't realize, but by 44' a Japanese sortie pretty much had guaranteed casualties against armed American ships, with actually lower success rates. Ironically ordering a single kamikaze pilot to their death was probably more efficient and just as cruel as a full sortie when US forces were literally pushing tons of steel into the air a second

I think the Ohka wasn't entirely a suicide plane, B-29 crew members claimed to see one of those things trying to intercept them. Japan had plans for a variant with 20mm cannons and a jet engine instead of rocket engine and the "special" payload but never really got around to using it but who knows

I'm vaguely reminded of those confederate submarines whose main attack was a mine strapped to the front, and I'm not sure if it's crazier to sign up to get into a weapon designed to be sacrificial vs signing up to get into a weapon where it's not supposed to be sacrificial but the guy who designed it's considerations for operator safety was "hope that when it blows up in your face it misses"

actually biological you arent presured to survive as long as possible, just to pass on your genes, so as long as you are useful enough to sustain yourself to reproduction, past that it doesnt matter much, so if the environmental pressures are to sacrifice yourself AFTER you have passed on your genes and are willing to do so, that makes biological sense.

The first 2 suicide bomber's of W.W. 2 were American fighter planes that hit Japanese aircraft carriers. Germany also used suicide planes against American bombers & bridges. The Italians had larger numbers & more different types of suicide weapons than any other countries, but none of them were used. The military groups that had the suicide weapons didn't support Benito or his government & didn't use any of them. Present day American nuclear bomber crews have orders not to return from their missions if they aren't successful.
