I was on the night time syndicated version of the show in 1985…the champion has a big advantage because they know the secret…you don't buzz when you know the answer, you buzz in when you think you know the direction the question is going…this was a low tech time, when you buzzed the sound goes off and a light on the podium, one or two more words will be said before the host can stop, and you have 3 seconds after that to answer…you take the basic question, hope they said the word that narrows down the possible answers, and quickly say the answer that satisfies the the first two aspects of the question. More than half of the questions are pretty obvious, a quarter are meant to be tricky, and about a quarter are meant to be hard (but aren't that hard). As long as you get the obvious ones right, you're guaranteed to maintain your score just by beating everyone on the buzzer…every one of the others you get right gives you a lead…which the other contestants can't catch up to as long as you beat them on the buzzer. It takes half or two thirds of the game for newbie contestants to get the timing down and become a threat to the leader. I was behind by 40 going into the lightning round, and only lost by 5 at the end. It was fun though.

the funny thing about Historic Game Show Winners is that there are 2 different categories of them.
    1. the ones that are actually really good at trivia games
    2. the ones that aren't as good at trivia but they found a weak point in the game's rules and Exploit It Heavily

    Your daddy works in porno
    Now that mommy’s not around
She used to love her heroin
    But now she’s underground
So you stay out late at night
And you do your coke for free
    Driving your friends crazy
    With your life’s insanity
    Well, well, well,
    You just can’t tell
    Well, well, well my Michelle
    Look out
    Sowing all your wild oats
    In another’s luxurious
    Yesterday was Tuesday
    Maybe Thursday you can sleep
But school starts much to early
    And this hotel wasn’t free
So party til your connection calls
    Honey, I’ll return the key
    Well, well, well
    You just can’t tell
    Well, well, well my Michelle
    Well, well, well
    You never can tell
    Well, well, well my Michelle
    Everyone needs love
    You know that it’s true
Someday you’ll find someone that’ll fall in love with you
But oh the time it takes
    When you’re all alone
Someday, you’ll find someone that you can call your own
    But till the ya better
Now you’re clean and so discreet
    I won’t say a word
But most of all, this song is true
    In case you haven’t heard
So come on and stop your crying
    We both know money burns
    Honey, don’t stop trying
And you’ll get what you deserve
    Well, well, well
    You just can’t tell
    Well, well, well my Michelle
    Well, well, well
    You never can tell
    Well, well, well my Michelle
    My, my, my Michelle
    My, my, my Michelle
    My, my, my Michelle
    My, my, my Michelle
    My, my, my Michelle
    Michelle

I played scholastic bowl in high school (basically competitive trivia for kids that couldn't play sports) and this was always my strategy lol. Hear like two words of the clue and buzz in with the first thing that comes to mind given the context and the pool of answers they'd be likely to use and it worked for me maybe a good 70% of the time. It's weird too cuz I'm a person that never wants to say anything definitively because I doubt myself and worry I'll be wrong and look dumb, but when I have a buzzer in my hand I become a different being with the confidence of a God (a God who is only right 70% of the time)

It’s just going faster than the opponents by staying calm and having a low amount of motion to hit the buzzer, and getting more questions right then wrong. I’m honestly surprised no one else thought of doing it sooner
