Michael Bolton’s Vday special is a Scott Aukerman joint, and it’s incredible. Well worth watching. Bolton is a good sport and genuinely funny. Tim Robinson’s in it. It’s awesome 😂

I'm gonna have to disagree about the Everything Everywhere all at Once not being comedy. Yeah it's not exclusively a comedy, but it's definitely fits the comedy genre. Like every other universe they dipped into was pure laughs even when the whole thing was emotional. Them having sausage fingers and licking them and the scene where they turn into rocks and everything. The script is fuuulll of jokes.

Like Parasite? Yeah that's not a comedy, a joke or two doesn't give something the comedy genre, but every other line in EEO has a joke in it.

One of the problems I find with a lot of comedies in the 21st century is that too many of the writers seem to think that acting inappropriately, doing things that don't make sense or acting as though you have a behavioral disorder in and of itself is supposed to be funny. It's not. When those things work it's because of the context they are put in, not because being too stupid to be alive or having no self-control is funny on its own.

I love Bill Burr, but Old Dads was insufferable. Every single scene was the most exaggerated situation that is impossible to relate to because no one talks like that lol. That shtick works in something like curb your enthusiasm because the show is intentionally absurd.

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed The Wrong Missy.
In fairness, on my first watch I cringed so much trying to get through it, but looking back I find it a genuinely quite funny watch

I really liked "Stuber" with Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista made in 2019. It's the same movie I've been recommending to people now for a decent comedy for the past 6 years. I completely agree Gabi. There are some pure comedies being made, but you have to dig for them.

atp if i’m looking for comedy i put on Reanimator or any Saw film because the timing is unironically hilarious. i watched the entirety of NBC’s Hannibal and laughed my ass off the whole time because the dramatic timing is hysterical and the plots are ridiculous. like it’s gotten to the point where i go to horror/thrillers for giggles

I've never heard anyone explain how I feel exactly about movies like you do! Except I'd say you at least give movies a chance anymore, honestly I more or less just watch stuff from you and Andy!

Remember in the 2000s when people still had a sense of humor? When you could laugh at a joke without holding a press conference about how “problematic” it was? That started to change during the Great Recession in 2008. The economy crashed, jobs vanished, and culturally, it was like someone flipped a switch.

The crash didn’t just hit markets—it hit the entire mood. Suddenly, people were acting like unpaid hall monitors, armed with hashtags and outrage, ready to scold.

By 2012, it got worse. Every offhand comment became a crisis. A joke wasn’t just a joke—it was an “attack,” a crime scene for the new police of feelings. Humor went from a coping tool to a red flag. People stopped laughing together and started competing for who could be the most outraged, like it was an Olympic sport.

Before everything got downvoted into oblivion by uptight fun-killers? Even Yahoo message boards were hilarious. You could scroll through threads and find comedy gold—not a lecture about why you’re the villain in someone’s personal drama just for disagreeing.

Instead of resilience, 2010s culture built a shrine to victimhood. Sneezes became microaggressions, sarcasm became hate speech, and the internet turned into a 24/7 tribunal. The easygoing humor of the 2000s was replaced by hypersensitivity.

Bad Moms Christmas was bad but what I do love is the way Mila Kunis says 'perfect', literally could watch it all day. Comedies have gotten so bad that I have rewatched all the old ones so much that I started watching movies that aren't meant to be comedies in their place like Twilight and my personal favourite, Jupiter Ascending. Also Mila Kunis but she can control bees for some reason? 🐝 Would love to see a let's watch of that gem Gabi ❤

There has actually been alot of 'studies' about this but with music and the way rock changed depending on the atmosphere and I wouldnt be surprised if it just that deep, we cant hide anymore from how awful things are so instead of a comedy movie we flock to doom scrolling goofy short videos so we have no brain power left for the bad

See "Edgar Wright – How to Do Visual Comedy" essay from Every Frame A Painting. The typical comedy movie falls flat because it's mostly just dialogue in a visual medium. There is nothing comedic about the imagery.
