My friend Cole Chaney shot me a text once upon time. “You’ve got to check this guy out” was the message. The guy to check out in question? That was this guy, Charlie Overman. As soon as I spun up the songs, I knew I wanted to meet Charlie. Apparently […]
The lads did it again, this time at the local pub. One of the nice parts of playing music in Ireland is the pub culture indeed. Sitting in cozy nook, playing some tunes amongst friends and strangers alike, over some mighty pints. Feels like i’m there, watching it now. The […]
The man, the myth, the legend, Jinx Lennon. He has been making “border schizo energy” (his term) interesting for a couple decades, and hasn’t slowed down. Seriously, he releases huge albums every year, some reaching 30+ tracks. It is some of the strangest yet alluring and catchy tunes i’ve ever […]
Back in Dundalk, Ireland, I was riding around in The Mary Walloper’s “scooby doo”-esque mystery mobile (the one with the backseat that wasn’t bolted down) on the way to the pub when we had to make a stop to pick someone up. The fellow who came out the flat that […]
There’s a special place in my heart for three things. 1, getting a deal. 2, getting that deal on a used item. 3, music. So when McKay’s (a southern business that buys/sells/trades on games, movies, books and music) offered $800 in store credit to anyone who went to EVERY location […]
This one is taken from a larger project, our full length 3-song/interview VHS HQ format ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZWWhP6I6HA&ab_channel=GemsOnVHS ). This song in particular is a very powerful one, in Hayden’s words, his late best friend “always asked (him) to write a song for his daughter,” and this is it. Keep up […]
Spring is in the air. I know because my eyes are watering, and not just from the music! Pollen abounds, particularly in this beautiful field of yellow flowers we found in Smithville, TN, out by my house. The Lowlies stopped by for a simple song, called Simple Reminder. You might […]
Hanging out at the Jalopy basement in Brooklyn, New York City, with our ole pal Jackson Lynch. Some of y’all might recognize Jackson from a recording we made many moons back, in New Orleans, a place he also lived for some time. He was playing with Chris Acker (https://youtu.be/YfOPRy5tGJo?si=bcNaafiTE1YOcAj5), and […]
We were lucky enough to sit down with John Lomax III, grandson of John Avery Lomax, son of John Avery Lomax Jr., and nephew of Alan Lomax. He shared with us a piece of his family’s staggeringly rich history pertaining to folk music, as well as some reflections on his […]
I got to accompany one of my dear friends and long time collabos, Esther Rose, on her road trip with the artist “Twain” on the West coast for a string of shows. I’d only been out that way a couple times, also on tours, so its always nice to visit […]
