Actually there is a bunch of really good soviet clowns. They usually was silent – it's hard to censor, then you don't say a word. Check on Nikulin, Polunin, Popov. Pure gold. Polunin I think still active, at least after soviet union disbanded he got successful shows all around the word. Check "Snow show".
