“A safety coffin or security coffin is a coffin fitted with a mechanism to prevent premature burial or allow the occupant to signal that they have been buried alive. A large number of designs for safety coffins were patented during the 18th and 19th centuries and variations on the idea are still available today.”

I know Hans Christian Andersen (a.k.a. "The Man Who Saved Disney…Twice…) had that buried-alive fear too. But did he have a sign saying "I'm Not Dead. I'm Asleep." or was that Edgar Allan Poe? Some sources have it be one or the other.

mythbusters did a video on being buried alive. i think they said 3 hours was the upper limit, before you run out of oxygen fully, but after 2 hours, you'd probably pass out from how thin the air got.
