In this month’s case study, I analyze ‘Run Away With Me’ by Carly Rae Jepsen, best known for ‘Call Me Maybe’ and her 2015 album EMOTION. Turns out it’s the best pop song of the decade (if not the century), but there are some really interesting reasons as to why. Enjoy!

Do you agree? Do you disagree? Do you think Crazy Frog’s ‘Axel F’ is better? Let me know why in the comments!

(P.S. I meant to say “F# major” instead of F when discussing the chords, apologies to all offended key signatures.)

(P.P.S The minor 2nd harmony in the last chorus is actually a major 2nd between F# and G# – sorry for misspeaking!)

I wish I understood half of the music theory and that I could play any instrument beyond the kazoo, but this video was awesome…I love your editing and presentation style on top of your breakdown of why this song is awesome! This whole album is incredible really…I just keep listening to it on repeat the past couple weeks or so. And now I have Dedicated in there as well.

The music industry is stupid for not appreciating Carly Rae more. The general public misses out because of their gatekeeping.

I feel like this is the perfect subject for a PowerPoint party (or Smartypants on Dropout).

Ask a few participants what their favorite song is, tell them that they are wrong, and begin the presentation entitled “Your Favorite Song is ‘Run Away With Me’ by Carly Rae Jepsen.”

Thank you for your brilliant educational analysis! As a producer, I couldn’t even tell you what key I’m in half the time, I just make music and know what sounds good 😂 But this song is one I’ll be studying for a long time, because it does so many smart things. That big room house snare and the pulsating rhythmic chorus are PERFECTION. 🤌

"But did they get their own Vine memes?!" "Run Away" by SunStroke Project, spawning Epic Sax Guy (with or without Gandalf), would like a word, but otherwise please continue, this is amazing and I might just have to subscribe or something to get more afterward.

I'm not a pop music listener but saw this video a few years back. Thank you, I have had run away with me in rotation since. It's passionate, honest, it shuffles and has that sax!

God forbid: A pop song in Mixo using 7th and Sus chords in 12/8. There are two ways to solve a puzzle: 1: You get the pieces and have to put them together. 2. You simply create the puzzle yourself, deconstruct it and then word your opinion. An older woman writes a song with an sax intro in 12/8 and in mixo? Love your content – thumps up.
