Robby Hoffman | It’s a New Dawn | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out

Mike Birbiglia | June 3, 2026

This week Mike and Robby Hoffman sit down for their first in-depth conversation like, as Robby puts it, two cats cautiously getting to know each other. Mike and Robby work out new jokes about vending machines and AI, share advice about marriage, and Robby begs Mike’s fans to stop sending him emails. Plus, Robby tells the stories of how she got cast in Hacks, and how her outspokenness at a writers guild meeting drew the attention of John Mulaney, who went on to direct Robby’s Netflix special Wake Up.

I loved Robbie in Hacks and Rooster. And good on her for calling out the fat cats heading up the union. I thought it was only SAG that sucked up to the producers.

The funniest thing about the episode was Mike explaining why you go to the swim meet 😂
But also as a non-parent I have to agree – anywhere I might be with a vending machine is Grim

The hatred for Autistics in this episode is very disappointing, as was the justification for the ableism afterwards. The problem with Musk and the other tech bros is not Autism, it's misanthropy. Autistics still face a lot of contempt and stigma even as some people try to claim everyone's 'a bit Autistic' as a trend. This episode really did not help.

Robby gives me Old School: George Gobel, Alan King, Joan Rivers, and also, somehow, Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore. I just LOVE Robby Hoffman

Before I saw who this week's guest was, I crossed my fingers and hoped it was someone from Hacks because that show's finale is all I've been able to think about for days. Robby did a great job of reiterating the theme of amazing things happen when amazing people actually work their asses off together for something amazing.

When I worked in film I questioned the dues, and wanted to get my own health insurance because I could get better insurance than IATSE. Eventually I was able to get this. A thousand dollars a month union dues. No way! Go Robbie😍

I know that your podcast doesn't choose the commercials that Youtube rolls during the program. But I always feel the need to comment about the specific commercials and there isn't a good place to do it. So the end roll had a commercial for Febreze where there was revolving door and they suggested you buy their room freshener and the same company's toilet paper. That made me wonder…..when you have a guest in your home studio how do you deal with the guest arriving and taking a massive poop in your home and then carrying on? Do you ever have a guess plug it up. Do you tell the kids to use a different toilet so there aren't any embarrassing things in the washroom if your guest needs to use it? Do they ever leave the packaging from a feminine hygiene product in the washroom garbage? Or do you imagine them sticking in their bag to dispose of later?

Yeah, that's where my brain went.

I think Robbie Hoffman is brilliant and funny. I really appreciace a comedian who doesn't feel the need to shoot off a joke ever 45 seconds. I love to hear about people's life experiences.

Oh no Mike. I know a lot of comics like Robby. I just don't get it. Robby is one of the least funny people that I have ever seen perform comedy. I hope the people who are Robby fans enjoy this episode.

I came to the comments section to determine if this is worth a watch but realized I can’t see any because this just got posted. So… sorry, Mike I think you’re hilarious but unfortunately most of your guests just aren’t. I suppose that’s why you help them work through their jokes at the end.
