"Maybe I'm all better… Maybe I don't need to do standup anymore," is a wild statement. I don't do standup but holy hell do I feel that.

Word of advice- research the guest somewhat before doing the podcast. Not knowing that Marc lost the love of his life recently had to have been embarrassing. That's basically all he's been talking about since it happened years ago.

i suppose it's possible to like Sam Harris for this no free will concept while not liking his persistent normalization and perpetuation of islamophobia but i still wonder if Jordan knows how much he's okay with it and the extent to which Harris dehumanizes arabs.

There's a piece she is missing on the "no free will" discussion that I think is important/compelling. Maybe it would have made Marc work a little harder to reject it. That is that we don't have control over our thoughts. So, if you observe your thoughts as they come to mind, you will realize that they come from basically nowhere. There are millions of them and you basically have no control over whether you will have them or not. You can decide how you respond to them. You can decide to focus on one or another. But you are still going to have like millions of thoughts coming all the time, and you are barely even aware of many or most of them. And those thoughts, feelings, sensations have a huge effect on your behavior. They are the total product of your genetics, history, trauma, present circumstance… whatever. They manifest all by themselves and they tend to control your behavior. The "no free will" thing seems kind of extreme. It's not that we have no effect on the world. It's that we aren't what we think we are. Sam doesn't just argue that there is no free will. He argues that there is no self. And both concepts are taken from Buddhist traditions.

The lack of free will idea can be triggering to a lot of people. You can see how people go against it like their lives are at risk. I don't think anyone can ever really say. I think the question to ask is, "what inside us is making this decision?" We are all connected in some way or another. We don't get to look at ourselves from another universe and decide what to do. We have to decide what to do within the space we are all connected in.

Jordan has a deterministic belief. Humans have a need for this psychologically especially in trying times. Thats why we have faith and religion.

If you hadn't asked him about The Mighty Ducks you would not have had the conversation about there being no free will. But did you choose to ask the question? What compelled you to check his IMDB?

Absolutely my favorite RIP convo – and I appreciate a lot of Jordan’s material, in and off stage – but this was such a wonderful conversation to get to eavesdrop into – which, we should all just have coffee together tomorrow, say 7:30 maybe?

Great conversational chemistry. Jordan'll hate this, of course, but it was kind of sweet: Each comic's baseline schtick is kind of furious, scream-y, tough, and ostentatiously neurotic. But you two seem to have a naturally calming effect on each other in a distinctly non-boring way I enjoyed. I hope cool Uncle Marc stops by again! 😉

I was a huge fan of "inside the actors studio" on A&E with James Lipton amd that lef me to watching long form interviews with actors, so naturally, i was drawn into the WTF podcast. Been a WTF listener since 2016. I follow a bunch of great pods now, with that long form interview style like Marc did, but i really miss WTF! Marc really informed my podcast taste. Dope seeing him being guest on other comedians pods.
