How can Grace's ship catch up Rocky's ship ? They start traveling home at the same time, then after period of time (doesn't know how long on the movie ) Grace realize something wrong and change course to catch up Rocky, how is that possible unless Rocky's space ship travels too slow ? Even when Taumoeba consume all Astrophage fuel on Rocky's ship, it still maintain constant velocity, right ?

I‘m confused after watching the movie maybe someone can help me out.
1: How do grace and rocky EXACTLY get to eridia? Which of boths ship do they take and how do they get the other to the selected ship after we see them reuniting? Since the „pipe thingy seems to be gone and also graces suit to survive on rockys ship
2: How does grace get and survive on rockys planet? Rockys ship being so hot I understood as it replicates rockys planet, so I thought it‘s extemely hot and grace wouldn‘t be able to survive there and then
3: At the end we see grace just normally being on eridia while rocky is in a suit (?) thingy on his own planet to survive? I didn‘t really get that and also why the class is behind the glass thingy. Or did they build a whole atmosphere for grace to live in before landing on there?

I do wonder why they decided to put glasses on Gosling? The simple answer is that someone on the team didn’t think he looked smart enough without them. I think they were right. Gosling is a fine actor, charming, funny, charismatic, pleasing on the eye… But I never saw him as a scientist. Like Depp, Reeves or DiCaprio – I’m never convinced by them being academics. Funnily enough, I believed Matt Damon could be an academic because of his role in Good Will Hunting. They didn’t make him wear glasses in The Martian.

I would love a sequel but it probably won't happen. Grace could lead an Eridian scientific/diplomatic mission to Earth, with Rocky, Adrian and their children along for the ride. Or there could be a new biological threat to either or both worlds. Maybe space whales that feed on space plancton. Maybe those space whales figured out faster than light travel and someone figures out how to attach a space ship to them.

Another plothole… The Eridians sent one ship 46 years ago, and then no other ship, even though they have a much easier time producing astrophage. And it's a little unclear what Rocky expected to achieve after his crew died. It might have been a better decision for him to return to Erid so that the Eridians can send more science Eridians, maybe even figuring out why they died on that ship.

From what I've seen elsewhere, Rocky's body is mostly inorganic. When he busts out of his environment to save Grace, the oxygen hits him and he's hot enough that his organic tissues catch fire. That's why the smoke and the trail of ash.

Fun fact; in the book Grace tries to save Rocky, but he actually damages him more by mistake. Rocky took longer to recover because of Grace´s attempt to save him.

A lot of things are confusing because the movie doesn´t explain anything. Important aspects are mentioned barely in a sentence. I hate to be that guy, but they did a poor job in the adaptation of the movie.

What does he eat while on eren ? Rockys biology? How was rockys civilization so much more advanced but not familiar with radiation or relativity considering those are probably the two most important concepts in space?

Idk I see and hear people saying they had trouble following it and you kinda need to know the book but I understood everything perfectly fine. It was very obvious and well said you just need to well… Watch the movie

Read the book years ago, absolutely loved it. Then read it about a week before seeing the movie. Both versions are awesome. I do especially love the scene with Stratt at the end of the movie that wasn't in the book, and the size of the dome the Eridians made for Ryland at the end. It was far bigger and grander than I envisioned from the description in the book. And I agree with other comments: I wish there were a directors cut that's WAY longer for home viewing!!

Overall I very much liked the movie. A very good adaptation. Two complaints about the movie though. 1) Grace also saves Rocky. He is the one who gets Rocky back into his side of the Hail Mary. Also, I feel like it's glossed over, if addressed at all, that Grace does not know if he even has enough food to get back to Earth and has no other way to get food. By making the decision to go save Rocky and Erid he is committing to a suicide mission. This is a big part of his character arc/redemption since he refused to go on the Hail Mary mission. 2) I did not like the character changes to Strat. While not necessarily evil or even bad, she is very cold and calculated. No one really gets along with her other than Grace and even that is tenuous. I guess as a bonus 3) there were some parts of the movie that were very serious or dire that the movie made kind of light/goofy. Strat essentially murdering Grace being one of them. Change those things and explain more of the science and this movie is perfect.

They dumbed down the scene where Rocky gives Grace some fuel to get home with, saying Rocky would take 6 years longer to get home. If I recall the book correctly Rockys ship had more fuel left over from his original journey than expected because his species was unaware of the effects of time dilation as you approach the speed of light, so it got there quicker than expected.

Here's what I want to know. At the very crux of the movie, after they've collected the taumoeba sample, why does Grace have to spacewalk out of his ship at the worst possible time to reel in the sample and bring it inside? Why couldn't he just easily maneuver away from the planet BEFORE his ship nearly falls apart and then do the spacewalk to pull it in once they were a safe distance from the planet? If that was explained in the movie, I missed it. It made absolutely no sense to me.

Please explain how the Eridians create the Earth-like 'habitat' (including ocean water) for Grace to live comfortably. I thought elsewhere it was mentioned that no light from the Eridian sun reaches the planet surface. And that atmosphere is toxic ammonia, huge pressures, etc. So they build a giant pressure vessel with artificial lighting, etc. ? Would not such a giant chunk of tech like this have tremendous energy costs?

There's always the pros and cons when the movie trusts its audience alot. Unlike Interstellar where Nolan thinks his audience need to be spoonfed with exposition; Lord & Miller basically passed the work to the audience.

This is why I think PHM is a better movie. Alot of the gaps are in the visuals.

Loved the movie because I read the book. I can see how confusing and full of plotholes this would be for someone who went in blind. Especially the reason why Grace had to go back for Rocky. If you miss 1 second of dialogue in the third act, you're lost.

I think the book went into a bit more detail ( or was it the movie ) about the coma tech. A company developed the coma stuff for cancer patients to be able to sleep during treatment. Human Doctors were going to monitor the process. The coma tech on the spaceship had to be 100% automated. THAT automation part was being designed as the ship was being built. It was implied that something might have happened to the other two astronauts that the 100% automation stuff could not handle since the autodoc? had not actually went through any years-long tests before it was setup in the spaceship. Sometimes when your on the bleeding edge… you bleed.
