I would have preferred Sabrina to just do taste tbh, like the alien bit was my fav and it would've been fun to see it for a whole song

Goddess, I can't get over the fact that MTV gave Katy Perry their Vanguard Award before they would give it to Gaga or Taylor 😑

I can't believe this podcast led to me deciding I really liked that American Idol song despite it sounding like the 2024 version of the Idol Finale hit.

I don't get the Chappell Roan hype at all, her music is so mediocre and boring.

Todd, I've been waiting for you to say something about the Sapphic Pop movement of 2024. It's been a long time since you covered "You Need to Calm Down" and "Me."

99% of the people who perform at the vmas, are people the industry want to be famous, and people who want they want to be famous again
And Taylor swift

Katy Perry is Al Bundy. She got 5 #1 songs off 1 album from 15 years ago and he scored four touchdowns in one game! Yeah that comparison is apt.

Todd, how do you feel about After Midnight by Chappell?

I don't have anywhere better to put this yet, but I'm calling it now. CARNIVAL is going on the Worst List for 2024 and most likely the top 5 if I could guess.

This is very unrelated to the topic of the video but I was thinking that weezers Pinkerton would be a great fit for the trainwreckords series despite the fact it’s beloved now and one of if not their best album at the time of its release it was critically panned, didn’t sell well and did irreparable damage to weezers reputation and music that they arguably still haven’t recovered from thus fulfilling the criteria of an album that ruined their career maybe Todd can judge it from the perspective of a casual listener that liked the blue album and had complete tonal whiplash from Pinkertons harsher sound and didn’t get a lot of the conceptual stuff from the album, just a thought

Anitta is in fact very famous in Brazil. Because she's a Brazilian pop star. Crazy how that works.

Chappell Roan is going to be the next Katy Perry. They are too similar and I can see 15 years from now all us being like “Wow, what happened?”

Delight as always. I didn't love Em's new album but man characterizing him as a rangeless has-been reliving his glory days was a disappointingly uncultured take.
On the other hand if he was ever a good for the VMAs he definitely isn't now.

Ngl, i think katy perry is going to have a renaissance within the next 5 years as the younger gez and oldest gen alphas get older.

Katy Perry is weird but she's too culturally evangelical to ever really lean into that in the way that for instance Chappell does because Chappell is authentically herself and Katy has always struggled to be herself.

Anitta is HUGE in Brazil, and I think she has some footprint in spanish latin america, but her efforts in the U.S. are pretty embarassing

South american here, and Anita is just about the same here, she has that one bit where she shakes her ass on the floor or something, "Anita's move", and that's about it, you don't hear much of her music outside of tiktok. Maybe in Brasil considering she's from there, but couldn't say.

I appreciated the additional strings on Good Luck Babe. Calling back to her Tiny Desk, Roan's vocals really mesh well with chamber instruments

"for a second i had a brief fantasy that the VMAs were gonna be relevant again off of this performance alone" – probably not the first to say this, but honestly i think it did do that. my gay little not-really-music-focused corner of social media has been blowing up over this performance, i haven't seen that happen in YEARS
