Pink Floyd: ‘Dogs’ (2018) | Is it any Good?

Classic Album Review | April 21, 2026

So, what do we think of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dogs’ the 2018 mix? I briefly examine how it differs from the version put out in 1977.

Rumor has it the missing liner notes were actually a major point of contention when this album was being discussed for release. Waters didn't want to include the liner notes but Gilmore did. Apparently the commentary within the liner notes did not paint Waters in a particularly positive light. Thus they agreed to release it without the liner notes. If one recalls this was the period in which Roger Waters was documented as spitting on a fan at a Paris concert.

Somewhat ironically: I was in college back when "Animals" was released, and at the time there were many of my friends who considered it a welcome "return to form" after the somewhat weaker album of "Wish You Were Here". But as time went on, people's opinions of "Wish You Were Here" kept going higher, while "Animals" seemed less wonderful. I was friends with the owner of a local record store (back when "local record stores" still existed…), and in the early 90's he said that for his stores the catalog-sales of "Animals" was the lowest of all Pink Floyd albums. (by the late 1990's that position was taken over by the lower catalog-sales for "The Final Cut" ).
I think "Animals" was tied a bit too much to the time it was released, especially with the song "Pigs, Three Different Ones". I suspect that most fans of Pink Floyd music who were born after 1980 don't even know the three specific people which are referenced in that song.
Personally, I think the two "Pigs on the Wing" songs and "Dogs" are among the best songs that PF has done. However, I don't care much for the other songs on the album, although I did really like "Pigs, Three Different Ones" back when it was first released.

Pink Floyd has open air recordings of already their entire European tour during 77 lol. The mics have been spotted in multiple photos, you can look at the thread in yeeshkul. OARs sound a bit worse than SBDs but are substantially better than audience recordings

This mix just confirms what the AMLOR remix already made apparent: Gilmour (though I love the guy) didn't realize how valuable Wright was until much letter than he lets on. At the time of Animals, there was a "clear hierarchy" (his words, not mine), and it definitely shows here. Some beautiful Rhodes parts make their first appearance, and all Wright's atmosphere work had been toned down on the original, and are now allowed to properly shine, almost to the point of changing the song's mood as you say. The central solo, which was an atmospheric weak point to me, is now on par with the rest of the song, which makes it pretty much perfect now. Good thing for Nick that his complexity can be heard again. Overall an amazing new mix.

It's a great mix subjectively. But it also helps to understand the process objectively. The remix involved either a far more accurate decoding of the dbx noise reduction originally in use on the multi-track tapes (which can be easily misaligned causing pumping and modulation), and/or the complete absence of its use for the 2-track mixdown (and the absence of that analogue 2-track tape generational loss).

The drums are also panned audience POV rather than drummer POV originally.

In any case you can bet that all remaining band members approved it before release.

Does Waters use leftist politics to numb guilt about Syd?
Roger said he laughed at Syds "crazy idea" to bring in 2 females to sing/play saxaphone before kicking him out then a female singer and a saxaphone are put on Darkside not to mention a rerecording of Syds Clockwork Room at end of Bike for opening of Time and Roger also reused Syds "scribbly black" line in it too.

I'm happy to hear there are so many 'Animals' fans here who, like me, think this album is top of the pile.
It's going to be great to hear the other tracks remixed. I love the 'Dogs' remix for all the reasons that have been highlighted here. In a strange way it also makes me appreciate the original mix more….if that makes sense to anyone.

It didn't have anything to do with the Floydian "mystique" bur rather that David somehow objected to particular details; this I heard directly from Mark Blake, who said that initially both had agree to include them in the packaging.

I don't understand the idea behind this remix. Everything is disconnected. More clarity? I mean is it really all about technological aspects? Because I can assure you that it is all there on original mix.

Oh, you have now less money because you bought it. Oh, I'm sorry.

In my opinion, remix isn't worth any kind of attention. And I'm really worried that Pink Floyd (after the beatles) is doing that.

My general opinion is, that no mix does make a "song" or a composition better. I love Dogs and the whole album anyways. In the case of the new remix i am much more curious for the 5.1 surround version! I own TDSOTM and WYWH in surround, and THATS really a new experience to listen to.
