The Chinese version of Pop Muzik at 18:20 is not M's own but The Barron Knights, an act who had been doing Weird Al Yankovic style parodies since the 1960s.

it's anti pop music. it's cynical. it's looking at music purely out of the perspective of artificiality.
it's basically telling regular people to become musicians and how to do it.
it's just showing that you don't need much to do it. why did he do it? maybe to oversaturate the market to make it meaningless. like he called it, corporate sabotage.
also it's showing what the future will be. because we're living in it now.

…I knew the song beforehand, but I am also in my mid 30s, so, just late cultural osmosis…
Not many songs make me actively dislike them (the majority of music that is not for me simply has me indifferent) but this song somehow does manage to actively make me want to punch through the speakers it plays from… completely on its own merit. That is to say: it is legit just bloody annoying to me. Musically it sounds vaguely like Mensch-Maschine era Kraftwerk (which I actually like… a lot), but without any of the atmosphere, and the vocals mostly remind me of my brain just glitching out and endlessly repeating the same short phrase over and over and over again, completely derailing my train of thought… which is something I straight HATE whenever it happens.

I remember this song, but then I was 9 when it came out, so it came out about when I started listen to the radio on my own.
Only thing that I had to compare it to was "Popcorn" by "Hot Butter".
Loved both of them.

Pop music as a genre and sound comes directly from Motown and the Beatles/the beach boys in the 60s
They had the structures and the fuckin templates or whatever, like they totally found the best way to write really catchy hooks and basslines and grooves and stuff

He was not a one hit wonder – Moonlight & Muzak by M peaked at No. 33 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1979. then "That's the Way the Money Goes" (No. 45 in March 1980) then "Official Secrets" (No. 64 in November 1980).
His album "New York London Paris Munich" was popular but sales figures are unavailable.

I was in the middle of the Ozarks, listening to the one FM station we could get. They played the hell out of this, I loved it. It charted when I turned 16. Seems like another freaking lifetime ago.

i got a fond memory about this song, i was a kid when it first released. the intro felt bright and fresh, and the rest of the song sounded so silly. whenever it aired on the radio it was a fun moment with my sister. we would sing and dance like robots with a blank stare on our face🤖😁. i still love Pop Music, just like i love Da-da-da by Tryo. it was experimental and funny.

1:01 Something I find exceptionally hilarious coming from the EDM side of music is Todd's labeling of Baauer (Harlem Shake) as a one-hit wonder, meanwhile he's still active on Twitch and his latest album PLANET'S MAD was Grammy nominated
