This reminds me of my freshman year of high school (2021-2022) when all the teachers would put Awesome Mix Vol. 1 on the speakers in their classroom.

Thank you for clearing up my faulty memories.
I was working in a bar in the early 70s and hooked on a feeling was on the jukebox. But it has always irked me that there was an earlier version on the radio in the 60s. BJ Thomas, huh? Never would have guessed.

The 'ooga chacka' is terribly childish, unnecessary, and probably racist. It makes me genuinely uncomfortable and actually embarrassed for the vocalist(s) who tracked it.

I don't know what I like better, the Ooga or the Chaga.

I think I first heard this song when BJ Thomas performed it on a 1992 episode of Bobby's World. The "ooga chakas"in this version are indeed grating.

6:23 Yes. The British. Be a real shame if someone important ended up involved in the same thing for years and years. Like… a future American president.

Björn Skifs… originated the role of The Arbiter in the musical Chess. Had no idea he was the same guy who sang this. Damn.
Sorry for being 10 years late.

Sorry, but I had a friend in school who would always joke that one day he’d murder me, get me taxidermied, and rig my body up with animatronics to dance and sing to Blue Swede’s version of hooked on a feeling like a human version of those singing bass mounts. That’s not nearly as funny of a mental image if I imagine it with the original version, so the cover will always be better imo.

this was the horniest song that was allowed to play at my high school's dances, and the ooga chaka is fun. can't hate it

I’ve seen this guy in concert before, this song tears up live!

Chess is back on Broadway, I saw it last weekend. It's not that bad.

So stupid that Todd doesn't fight harder to keep these in the Playlist.

"I assume something racist about it, even though I couldn't tell you how or against whom."
Progressive logic 101.

6:09 I wish the episode was about this version exclusively so we could cover that B-side

Sometimes I wonder why Todd isn't a cultural ambassador and then he says something like "written in complete gibberish with weird marks over the vowels."
Stay Classy.

Blue Swede sounds a Lot like The Archies once they get into the harmonies.

These guys are really good at ruining classic 60s pop songs.

The Dancing Baby should have had a stronger mention. It was on of the first, if not THE first internet viral videos. When it came out in ‘96 it was all people talked about.

The Association really don't deserve to be as forgotten as they are. Never My Love, Windy, and Cherish, throw in Along Comes Mary in there too, is a pretty strong legacy fifty years down the road.

Not sure if i remember this correctly but I was watching a robwords vids and I think the word suede DID come from the word Swede.
So both correct??? I don’t think it works like that but everyone wins right

6:08 How did Todd just gloss over the fact that he has a song named "I Don't Want To Be Gay" on the B-Side of the single 💀

Next time, do a review of Jonathan King’s classic “I Don’t Want to be Gay”, which I had never heard of until just now.

Wow, yeah, this is probably Todd's worst take. Almost hilarious how much he hates this version.
@pkducklett944
May 8, 2026 at 8:04 am
As a Chess fan, I can pretty confidently say it will likely never come to Broadway (it had a failed Broadway run in the 80s). But it does have a pro-shot of a performance done at the O2 in London in 2008 that's available to watch. I promise it is just as insane as you think. Possibly more insane.
@Crane_Eater
May 8, 2026 at 8:04 am
Jonathan King is the guy who discovered Genesis. They had a friend of theirs put their demo tape in his car, he liked Peter Gabriels voice, and he called them back and had them go to London.

I’ve always hated the BJ Thomas version but I love Blue Swede’s version
@thereallocke8065
May 8, 2026 at 8:04 am
The Swedish singers voice kinda works for me it's got thsi very im a big doof who managed to pull a bady way out of my league.
I guess the other version is I'm q scrawny nerd who managed to pull a baddie outside of my league.
But as a millenial who was introduced to the song via guardians of the galaxy, the Blue Swed version definitely fits starlord

8:50 Same. I don't know enough about music to explain why, so it's completely irrational, but I hate this song.

Over the next 9 yeas, Todd would learn that Sweden is the capital of earworms. A surprisingly big chunk of catchy melodies had at least one swedish person in the writers room.
