   As a very keen cyclist, I'd have to say " fell off her bike, hit her head and died" would be an epitaph I'd be happy to have on my headstone.

   Such a fantastic coincidence that this was uploaded only a few days before I listened to this album. One of the most evocative albums I've ever heard. And an ambrosia to my reed instrument addicted self

    Marble Index is elegant and apocalyptic. The lyrics are fantastic in both senses of the word. Marred only by Cale’s occasional overproduction (the bosun’s whistles on Ari’s Song are distracting and borderline obnoxious). Also his attempt to shut her out of the studio is peak hipster chauvinism. Morrissey also sounds like he was threatened by her artistic courage and indifference to critique.

    A brave choice to tackle! Her lips look dehydrated on the sleeve. The only other artist I've seen with dehydrated lips in photos was David Bowie in the mid to late 60's lol I love this record. And 'Desertshore.' 'No one is there' is so icy and beautiful. Such a singular and determined vision. ('The End' – incredible too.) Lydon's even on record as saying he sings Janitor of Lunacy' in the shower! Great video Abigail, thank you. T

    To me this record is not dark but light, blinding light.
    The most frightening part of Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the end, when she escapes into the day, and has to face her experiences and all she has seen as the unforgiving sun beats down on her.
    It makes sense that The Marble Index was borne of a peyote trip in the desert and not in a dark New York studio.

    I was subjected to this album by a friend when it was released who put headphones on me and turned the lights off. Evening Of Light was truly, magnificently terrifying. When compact discs were invented, this was the first album I bought (along with a player), so I could hear every single detail of John Cale's astounding arrangements.

    I know a guy who played drums for her when she was living in Manchester. A lot of time was consumed seeking out her next fix. A sad end to an extraordinary life.

    I'd never really thought about Nico that much. I know that she had her tragic accident only a couple of years after she'd finally got totally clean from heroin. Seems like she wanted to live after all…. and wasn't allowed to. For another tragic soul who wanted to destroy themselves, do Susan Fassbender's "Twilight Cafe: The Demo Collection 1981-1985. There's a sheen of happiness, but you only have to listen to "Doppelganger" and "Elilliath" to know the girl ain't right. She (and her erstwhile collaborator Kay Russell) deserved a whole lot more. Some of the demos are actually Kay's – and boy, she was talented in her own right – but this is more about the derangement of a soul that was made for music but not its disappointments, made to love the world but not herself. Go out with your credit card, Abigail, and buy a slice of tragedy.😢

    I dont fully understand Nico but I enjoyed your sppreciation of her. Totally get that her appearance created obstacles to appreciating her person.

    Sixties Art Major — Nico, and the group I was working with, shared the stage while I was on "The Road" during 1976 at de Melkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We spoke together during rehearsals/sound checks and I'm glad to say she was pleasant and kind. Yep, she played that (in)famous harmonium and was accompanied by acoustic guitarist Lutz Ulbrich. I could see that "The Road" was definitely affecting her, though. We lost Nico after a bicycle accident 12 years later, but I'm glad to remember those pleasant moments before our shows.

    Nico is my favourite female artist along with Alice Coltrane. I love all her work but to get the most from this one I need to get myself in the zone. It sure isn't party music.

    I had the great thought of relistening to this album after more than a decade while walking my dog at 5 A.M. after watching this video and it was one of the most anguishing and horrifying aural experiences of my life. I loved every minute of it. It's up there with late career Scott Walker in the "albums to have a mental breakdown to" category.
    John Cale is one of my heroes. Thank you for reminding me of this masterpiece.

    I'm guessing the Moe Tucker episode is coming. She's never been in the commercial sphere like, reed, cale or nico but she's my favorite of the solo careers. her album playin' possum is one of my fav albums of all time.

    Thank you Abby for this VU themed miniseries. Exactly! But most especially for this Nico vid, which is your finest and most passionate work ever. Truly grateful. And for your followers still more curiouser I would like to recommend the documentary 'Nico Icon' which is currently up on YT, as well as John Cale's 'Nico, The Ballet' which is sometimes a bit formal but also sometimes very touching.

    Based on this, i wonder what you would say about Scott Walker's late era trilogy, because that is as unflinching and dark as anything here, but maybe also more darkly humorous

    For me, "No One Is There" is the most unnerving track on the album. It reminds me of where Scott Walker was artistically when he made "Tilt."
