In a historic act of reparations, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration returned nearly two acres of land to the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The Catholic sisters operated St. Mary’s Indian boarding school for 86 years in northern Wisconsin but their privately owned spirituality center is near the Lac Du Flambeau reservation. It was sold at a cost in a symbolic “land back” transfer. The tribe plans to use the property for professional housing while navigating the complexities of placing it into trust, marking a meaningful step toward acknowledging past injustices.
