Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. He is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium. His professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson obtains his data from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as from telescopes in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and in the Andes Mountains of Chile.Tyson is the recipient of nine honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid “13123 Tyson”.Tyson’s new book is Astrophysics for People in a Hurry (2017).

Neil deGrasse Tyson: I have to chuckle a little bit when I’m approached by anybody, but in particular journalists, and say, “Are scientist worried that the public is in denial of science or is cherry-picking it?” And I chuckle not because it’s funny but because they’re coming to me as a scientist when they should be going to everyone. Everyone should be concerned by this, not just scientists. In fact, scientists will just continue as they’re doing. You might withdraw funding, but then there isn’t any science done—okay.
You are transforming your civilization if you choose to either stand in denial of science or withdraw science funding from those who are actually doing the research. Everything we care deeply about that defines modern civilization pivots on innovations in science, technology, engineering and the math that is the foundational language for it all. Everything: transportation, your health, your communication through smart phones that talk to GPS satellites to find out where Grandma is. To make a left turn to find her address or the nearest Starbucks. Whatever is your need, whatever is your want, the emergent innovations in science and technology are not only enabling it, they are creating for you solutions to challenges you always lived with but never thought that they could be solved.
The message is clear: if you do not understand what science is and how and why it works—by the way, I’m not even blaming you. I look back as an educator, I look back to K through 12, kindergarten through 12th grade, and I say there’s something missing there. If you, as an educated adult, can say, “This is what these scientists agree to, but I don’t agree with them.” If that sentence even comes out of your mouth it’s like: oh my gosh.
Okay, well, we live in a free country, you can say and think what you want. I’m not even going to stop you. But if you rise to power and have influence over legislation and that legislation references what you think science is but is not, that is a recipe for the unraveling of an informed democracy. So I’m not even going to blame you. It’s not your fault. I’m an educator. Let’s go back to K through 12.
Somewhere in there while you’re learning about reading, writing, and arithmetic and while you have a class in earth science and biology and chemistry, maybe physics, somewhere in there there needs to be a class, possibly taught every year, on…

wherein we see Neil is not nearly as intelligent as we may have assumed 😉 (agnostic is 'i'm not sure about if there are gods :)) — Any higher educational institutes tiers of 'harder', 'takes smarts' disciplines (usually the sciences) become much so and then fully atheistic, for most students (there's the odd oddy that "just loves God" despite being a physics , engineering brain etc. but it's NOT prevalent.) and there's religious famous scientists in modern history etc etc – but prevailing, averages, are that if the intelligent mind cannot be shown how a spiritual idea might be/'is' true, then it is not valid. /welcome to atheist thought, proofs, etc.

Agnosticism just means "I dont know". I think many religous people would say they dont know but the difference is "They Belive".
Saying "I am agnostic" is like answering pinapple when someone asks you if you perfer apples or pears.

Well, whether you call yourself an atheist or agnostic, common people will always misunderstand. When I used to define me as an agnostic, many implied, I was „seeking for god“. No, I‘m not. Now I say „I am what is called an atheist“ and they leave me alone.

It's okay not wanting to associate with a movement or even not wanting any labels. He's right about all the baggage it comes with trying to fit into labelled boxes. However, labels, however oversimplified of people's lived experiences and complex stance, are there for a reason.
Imagine a convo like:
"Are you a Christian?"
"I do follow Christ and the Holy Bible, and believe in the Biblical God. But it's complex."

I am an atheist agnostic drugist, meaning I am actually an atheist because I do not believe there is an invisible man in the sky that created our universe, controls our lives, watches and gives out good or bad points with the promise of heaven, threat of hell or never ending re-incarnation, but in public I claim to be agnostic because I do not want to clash with theists, hear over and over again arguments that make no sense, nothing I can say will ever change their minds nor mine so I am over it, that fight is not my fight, please let me spend my time intellect and energy on subjects that actually matter to me before my inevitable death that despite my sense of self conscience and over inflated ego means absolutely nothing which hence means my sufferings meant nothing and that is quite terrifying so please legalize all drugs because as a drugist I believe in their mighty power to wire my toxic brain differently so I can actually enjoy my time alive on this earth as a gift and not just a curse filled with dread fueled by anxiety from my impending doom, the end a life that had no meaning and will soon be forgotten

I am an atheist, i can not understand his depiction of Atheism, i do not, and have never met with other atheists to discuss the fact that no god is real. I have never even met another Atheist, except my brother. The very reason i am an atheist is because i do not gather with anyone in any place to discuss or worship the lack of a god, i do not believe in rituals based on belief, not religious or Atheistic. I am an Atheist because as far as i can ascertain all gods are human inventions and no god is real, so i do not believe in them or that any such being is possible, because such a being would be beyond science and that does not seem a real possibility to me. I am involved in no rituals, meetings or discussions with other atheists, and am not interested in such. So i do not know what he is talking about.
