   I tried to cover as much ground with this topic as I could, but I’m sure they are plenty of things I didn’t mention that are leading to this overall feeling. Let me know if there’s something I missed, or if you’re feeling another way about music these days.

   When it comes to addiction one song comes to mind and thats Pink pony club. I remember i heard that song maybe 3 times and for some reason I couldnt get the song out of my head. It was like the song was designed to be as stimulating as possible just like doom scrolling. It was addictive but in a bad way. I couldnt get that song out of my head , I had to not only avoid listening to the song but listen to YouTube videos that get you to get songs out of your head lol. I was able to finally get thw song out of my head, but damn music is shit nowadays.

   You are confusing imperfections with screw ups. All the things you pointed out were straight up screw ups. Screwing up doesnt make anything better. People dont watch a play and see the actor screwing up or forgetting his lines as some great moment.

   Imperfections are things you often see in a live show. You want to see great imperfections go watch a rock band play live
   … anyone , you pick it(black keys , killers, greta van fleet,ect). A great imperfection would be seeing that the singer sings the song in a different way or manner. Since the recorded version of the song is a perfected version of the song , seeing it live is when there is space for improvisation and progressive overload.
   A great example of an imperfection is when the RHCP played in that infamous SNL show where John Fruciante was about to quit the band, so he played the song Under the Bridge like he didnt give a fuck. He played different chords , messed around for too long in the intro but at the same time stuck to the chord progression so that Flea and Chad can go on with the song. In the end he pulls out this crazy solo that made the song rock harder and honestly its my favorite version of the song.
   Another great imperfection is Thundercats live rendition of "Them Changes " when he performed it on Tiny Desk. He does the song like usual. But then after the second verse decides to pull out this crazy bass solo to end the song. If you hear the recording of Them Changes there is no bass solo anywhere. Thundercat decided to put the solo there in the live version because he felt like it and thats a imperfect treat for the audience.

   Not for me! I've been enjoying finding new music now more than ever! Just discovered The Paradox yesterday and their pop punk music made me feel so nostalgic. Probably whats ruining other people's enjoyment is being on social media, seeing other people hate on music before you even listen to it will decrease your love for it

   You completely missed the mark with "imperfections", that doesn't mean people want clear mistakes and errors, it means they don't want click tracks and autotune, they want to hear more organic time signatures and real voices…. and then you trying to insert a jab at capitalism makes zero sense…. if you're afraid of capitalism you must be doing something absurdly wrong….

   Born in 1971, had a subscription to Rolling Stone in my High School days. Went to CBGB's often in 1988-1989 for HardCore shows. By the late 1990's, worked a clerical job at RED Distribution when the big record we were involved with was "Crossroads" – Bone Thugs and Harmony. Then worked at Tower Records 4th & Broadway, Village NYC during the brilliant trip-hop era. Then worked at the famous Times Square NYC musical instrument store Manny's Music where people like Cornell Dupree came in the store and told of how much he in particular guided Jimi Hendrix to a better musical level at Jimi's Isley Brothers' sideman era. So.. I like music still at 54 years old because I rely on building up regularly an MP3 player with songs that most likely will retain a listening benefit (not EVERY song off an album – that's EXTREMELY RARE) and having many different folders of different genres on that MP3 player (which I use sparingly). Then I designate Friday and Saturday to listening to Pandora artist's radio stations of artists that I like in a regular rotation each month (not the same Pandora artist's station every Friday and Saturday). Plus, generally, I like that pop music is more youthful (I remember when pop music was men in suits like Michael Bolton,etc.) and I like pop music is back into dance like the late 70's of my youth (and early 90's of my young adulthood).

   Instagram introduces me to A LOT of music while scrolling – music that wouldn't have been popular in my youth but now has a chance to do something in this modern era of openness. And I like that modern music is doing something interesting with keyboard sounds from pop to somewhat Indie bands like Crumb, Beach House, and HOMESHAKE, and Men I Trust, and the Marias which is my current interest (weird keyboard sounds). So…I'm pretty okay but I do wish music could get more traction with the public overall – especially the interesting R&B like Amaria, Adi Oasis, Ka'Miko, Alex Isley, etc. – not happy that type of modern Black music isn't dominating Black music at the moment.

    something interesting to consider is that the people who are putting out new music are people too – people who get phone addictions, turn 33, get depressed/apathetic and whatever else that might effect the creativity, authenticity and “fun” they put in their music. they’re not immune to brain rot and doomscrolling and all that, which i feel effects my own cognition and ability/desire to put effort and emotional energy into music. since they’re aging and maturing their sound might hit a standstill in the same way people’s music tastes tend to at that age.

    plus, a lot of the artists i’ve noticed people saying aren’t “hitting” anymore are gaining much more popularity and wealth, and thus are becoming less connected with their audiences and the music they put out because their experiences are no longer relatable. and, this fame and wealth brings writing, production and marketing teams – which are not inherently bad and can be very beneficial to the quality of people’s music, actually – but can also limit the artist’s influence over their music and can turn the music more into a product or brand than a genuine expression of an artist’s emotion and authenticity.

    in film/hollywood discourse i also see a lot of people talking about how streaming services know a lot of their viewers put tv shows on in the background and don’t pay a lot of attention so they urge writers to dumb their shows down/design it to be put on in the background. there could be an element of this in the music industry too, where labels push their musicians to write more for a vibe or background audio than an emotional expression that requires active listening.

    that being said, there is so much good music being put out right now, and i keep finding better and better things to listen to! if finding good new music is important to you, it’s easy to find some pretty innovative stuff.

    The music is a reflection of society and there so much bad so you get 2010s mumble rap about how much money you have, not clear emotions or feelings and the insincerity of the words leaves you empty, in a truth is optional world real art is hard to find.

    They shouldn't block Rock (not rock/pop) and traditional R&B (not r&b/hip hop mix) from the mainstream airwaves. Those two genres were literally the backbone of modern music. This is the label heads executives karma for their greed and pride.

    We've been tryin to tell Gen Z that their music is flat as hell. Now that the MJ movie came out and their's a resurgence of our music from back when, they're finally seeing that the quality has gone down dramatically in the last 20+ years in just raw talent selection. That coupled with socioeconomic and political and corporatized "art" and AI slop and personal downturns, yeah…..of course you don't enjoy it. Yet they continue to call Millennials cringe when we say we miss our music or love Disney songs and movies….we've BEEN experiencing this feeling for a while. The difference is we can latch onto what we know was fun and emotional and talented when we were younger VS the kids and young adults now who grew up in more lackluster or lower quality music being peddled to them with a corporate label on everything.

    Or maybe at 33 you've heard it all, so now everything sounds derivative, and while some of it can be good, it's still at best as good as whatever inspired it, or just a really good imitation.
    You've not become Unc, you've just accumulated enough knowledge to now not enjoy anything.
    Enjoy being bored. 😂

    Like I remember my dad who was in his fifties at the time singing Lady Gaga's Bad Romance. That's your bar babes, if you can get me, like my dad, to sing your song, you've done something interesting. Because when she did her first album, she was truly not like anyone else.

    My alarm radio is set to a station that plays 70s, 80s and 90s songs. A friend has the same station in her car. My dentist has the same station playing and singing with it while cleaning my teeth. It's those songs that stick with people in a fun way.

    I think there are 2 big problems with modern music. 1. Modern music breaks classic song structure to fit the streaming era, your brain notices that and it feels incomplete. 2. Many people rely on apps to tell them what’s good, when it isn’t good you feel like something must be wrong with you. Popularity and quality aren’t the same.

    Modern metal is awesome. I just saw Castle Rat last week and it was one of the my enjoyable concerts in years. Behemoth were surprisingly good as well.

    I don’t really agree with that. art is a reflection of its time, we live in Age we’re everybody is so sensitive, and flat out depressed ( most likely from social media)and the cost of living increasing, so the music is just a reflection of the current Zeitgeist in pop culture. This is just my opinion, there’s still a lot of facts that I don’t know.

    When I started the video, I kinda started with the thought of "Capitalism" being the reason, but the final one seemed pretty likely tho. I may be over 33 but my interactions with other people my age have made me starkly aware of my music consumption being an outlier. There's a lot of reason why for me getting MORE intense in seeking out new music, but seeing how hard it is to coordinate a hangout with my parent friends I'm like "yeah it makes sense you wouldn't be catching tracks at release anymore, no shade."

    5:39 This is only a good comparison if your friend is also not catching fish. If they're catching fish…then you should probably follow their example to catch more fish! And if you don't want to go to the place where the fish are congregating (this being the type of person mentioned next) then you don't get to complain about the lack of fish!

    I think it really boils down to the record labels themselves gatekeeping artists from being able to fully express themselves through the music that's supposed to be more public instead of private. The biggest culprit behind this is the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which has actually done more harm than good.

    Most of that power has gone not just to the record labels but to corporate shareholders who care more about their bottom line rather than the interests of the artists themselves and the people consuming the music. I think you'll get a better idea of this by listening to John Mellencamp on The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.

    I've allowed myself to not keep up with the musical zeitgeist as I've aged, and that allows me to not feel anxiety.

    In turn, I get to deep dive into genres I never would have considered.

    For me, as a musician and music fan, most English-language new music has been incredibly uninspiring. Despite a few exceptional new albums by artists such as Johnny Blue Skies, Ratboys, Emily Scott Robinson, My New Band Believe, and Bruce Hornsby that have been released this year, it’s been kind of a wash. In response, I’ve been seeking out non-English language music, and those current music obsessions range from Brazilian Tropicália and Rock Music to Japanese City Pop, Electronic Music, and Jazz Fusion such as Tom Zē, Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tatsuro Yamashita, Masayoshi Takanaka, Taeko Onuki, Akiko Yano, Haruomi Hosono, Happy End, and YMO.

    I grew up buying CD's, and when you purchased a CD, you made an investment in that music. Nowadays music doesn't have the same value as it is all so freely available and you can jump from artist to artist, album to album, song to song. Streaming literally devalued music and the AI stream-farming cesspools that platforms like Spotify are becoming are deserved. I can see physical media making a comeback and people actually adding value to music again…

    Elder Gen X here, and this is a normal and predictable experience that happens in your 20s and 30s. At that point you start to notice repeating patterns and the novelty wears off so you get your first pangs of cynicism. Don't worry, you just gotta power through it cuz it gets better!
