0:33 I am a zillenial (1997) in the UK they were popular because kids could use their SMS credits to get songs because most didn't have computer or internet access or a way to put in account or debit card information. The other thing is, since they clipped the song you would have to get more than one to get the part you might want to switch between.
Sometimes companies would sign you up to pretty sneaky recurring bills to download one song most would miss because of the smallprint it was a games and music service.

Speaking of weird nonsensical languages, I'd give Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest a slight shoutout because they didn't just send one song in an imaginary language in the competition, but rather two and both in the 21st century. Their first, Sanomi, almost won the edition, only coming 2 points short from the one that actually won it and it's highly praised by hardcore fans of the contest. The second attempt wasn't as equally lucky as it failed to qualify from the semis in 2008.
Netherlands tried their hand at playing partially with this trope in 2006 too, but they also failed to qualify.

It's so cool to see Celentano mentioned here in an english video, he truly is just a 0-fucks-given artist and he's really iconic here in Italy.

Hey, what's this cheap shot at Franz Ferdinand ?
Anyway, Celentano's biggest hits are probably not his forgotten 80s romance songs, but his 70s hits like I want to know (a song on the housing crisis !), Il Ragazzo della via Gluck (one of the first songs on gentrification, which is also sung in a French version by Françoise Hardy) and of course Svalutation (the only song I know of on devaluation…)

Depeche mode was NuWave not techno. I'm not the type that normally argues about this stuff but I grew up in the New Wave and early Southern California punk scene and worked as a DJ back then. Techno music didn't really get played on the radio play New Wave bands like Depeche mode or echo & the bunnymen got a lot of underground or college radio play. I always liked the more intense new wave that came out of the new romantic scene or even the new romantic scene itself. It never got any better than the band Japan.

One great story is about the stranding of a cargo ship in Cabo Verde. In one of the containers there was a shipment of the newest keyboards made in Japan, destination a tradeshow in Rio. These keyboards were distributed by the government to music schools on the islands jumpstarting the rise of music from Cabo Verde. A mix of tradional sounding songs with the latest sounds from Japan.

Fun fact: Prisencolin was released on an LP which is basically also the first ever mixtape album (Nostalrock) with samples, skits, new versions of old songs, overall a very loose record with an experimental, wacky and personal vibe. Celentano, truly a hip-hop pioneer 🙂

When it comes to nonverbal vocalizations I really like the term falderal, often attributed to bards of olde filling empty lyrical space with simple syllables or other nonsense, i.e; your la-la-la's and tra-la-la's. Wait – did you just touch my tra-la-la?

I downloaded an application on Windows that allowed me to edit just about everything on my LG phone. I wsa able to clip MP3s and save it under the ringtones folder without ever having to pay for any ringtones. Also, the phone had a decent speaker on it so it was able to play the MP3s at a higher fidelity than if I had downloaded ringtones off the Verizon store.

I had originally heard that Adriano Celentano was annoyed at how popular American music was in Europe and thought that Europeans would listen to anything that sounded American and didn't care what the song had to say, so he wrote prisencolinensinainciusol to expose and embarrass them a little

I grow up with those experimental albums of Celentano. I was just a baby learning to walk and learning to dance with his music and some ABBA, some Beatles and some Mina (another Italian singer). It’s an interesting question that I like to ask when I met someone new: what music did you first hear because of your parents/family?

I do computers for a living. When I got my first cellphone that supported MP3 ringtones I made my own in Windows, then used a USB cable to put it on the phone. I actually STILL have that ringtone on my Android 15+ years later. I just have my phone on silent now.

Oh man! How I miss my Nokia ringtone.
I had the Austin Powers shaguar ringtone, wich was really just the presidential telephone ringtone from Our Man Flint , but in reverse.
If I watch the Austin Powers or Flint movies, I still get a jolt when the sounds come up.
The sound for text messages was a gong sound from football match-of-the-day on TV

Talking about weird music venues, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have performed in Lukiškės Prison in Lithuania a few weeks ago, as well as many more artists. The prison was still open for the purpose of keeping inmates as late as 2019 until they got moved out (whether that's related to staff allegedly psychologically abusing inmates or that the prison looked too gorgeous for inmates to live in) and since then Lukiškės Prison became a public tourist attraction and also a venue for concerts. I am gonna see Denzel Curry perform there in a couple weeks, but afaik Viagra Boys & Kamasi Washington will also perform here in the summer.
