The ModRetro M64 is nearly here, and in this video we’re taking our first look at one of the most anticipated retro gaming consoles in recent memory. Designed to play original Nintendo 64 cartridges using FPGA technology, the M64 aims to deliver an authentic N64 experience on modern displays while adding the conveniences retro gamers expect today.

We’ll unbox the hardware, examine the design, check out the controller, and see what ModRetro is bringing to the table as it enters the growing FPGA console market. Can the M64 live up to the hype? Let’s find out.

A translucent shell of vibrant hue,
A window on top lets the board shine through.
With gold-plated traces and silicon bright,
The hardware awakens to modern-day light.

No software emulation stutters the pace,
The FPGA core matches chip-level grace.
It reads your old cartridges instantly fast,
A seamless bridge to the pixelated past.

An eject button clicks so you swap with one hand,
A spin-wheel and light bar obey your command.
Four glowing ports wait for controllers to find,
    With USB-C and HDMI lined.

Up upscaling the video to clear 4K,
The bilinear smoothing makes textures play.
From 720p to the crispest display,
The polygons dance in a beautiful way.

Updates arrive over air via Wi-Fi,
As community firmware climbs up to the sky.
With new indie titles and prototypes reborn,
A glorious dawn for the sixty-four morn.

Thanks a lot Jon, very nice video, and good to see games work fine. I chose the purple color when they did the poll some time ago, but green looks impressive… maybe I’ll change to green… but the problem is I love violet colors so much…

The controller is definitely the coolest thing about this whole M64 release, although I still think the Analogue 3D is a better product currently. I will say, if ModRetro can update the M64 to have feature parody with overclocking and save states like the Analogue 3D for a lower price, then I think it could be a true contender to overthrow the Analogue dominance

While the unit looks really pretty, I'm too old to get into collecting cartridges to justify getting one, but I'll definitely get at least one controller to play on emulators and a future FPGA I'll get. Besides it supporting BT, I'd love it if they include a USB dongle for the convenience and usually reduced latency, either included or as an optional add on. Anyways, nice video as usual Jon!

I’ve still got an original N64 so this isn’t for me but that controller looks amazing. Like you Jon I really liked the three prong design and have always found it one of the most comfortable controllers I’ve ever used. And yes I was one of those shouting MRC is brilliant. Last point from me an afternoon on Goldeneye was definitely not a wasted one 😁
