The Straight Dance of Oklahoma tribes is a formal and prestigious southern dance style, believed to have originated with the Ponca through the Hethuska societies, and is defined by precision, coordination, and restraint. The regalia is carefully planned as matching sets, typically featuring dark wool aprons, leggings, and draggers accented with intricate ribbonwork, edge beading, finger-woven garters, beaded belts or silver conchos, and an otter drop worn at the back. Additional elements include loom or peyote beadwork, silver arm bands and spreaders, a single-feather roach, ribbon shirt with coordinated scarves, bandoliers, bells, and beaded moccasins. Dancers carry either a tail stick or mirror board, and the slow, dignified movements emphasize smoothness, timing, etiquette, and quiet pride, reflecting the discipline and heritage of the Straight Dance tradition.
