McCarthy’s Public Humiliation is Causing Internal Republican Turmoil
Erin Ryan and Alyssa Mastromonaco ring in 2023 with GOP chaos (Kevin McCarthy taking L’s in the House speaker vote, Matt Gaetz being funny for the first time in his life), great new California legislation coming into play (including more abortion protections and no new fur coats), and Idaho murder updates.
Political commentator and comedy writer Erin Ryan and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromonaco are joined by a bicoastal squad of funny, opinionated women to talk through everything from reproductive rights to romcoms. They break down the political news of the week, plus the topics, trends, and cultural stories that affect women’s lives. New episodes drop every Thursday. Get in touch: hysteria@crooked.com.
Crooked Media believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us—one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. Re the Idaho murders: "only" 4 were murdered. There were 6 in the house, 1 dog. 2 of the roommates did not die and there is news that one of them may have seen the alleged perpetrator. Arrested man is reportedly vegan and there is speculation that he may have spared the dog with that in mind? Meanwhile killing 4 humans…..

If it weren't for Schadenfreude, I'd have no freude at all. Fortunately, the GOP debacle is giving me plenty to choose from.

14:22 – I think the fur ban is actually a mistake. Obviously, credit where it's due that they exempted indigenous craftsmanship and the most common animal products like cow and sheep, but these sorts of laws are generally done in the name of environmentalism without actually considering bigger picture/knock-on environmental effects. The main (and basically only) alternative to furs and leather products is faux fur and synthetic leather but like… that's just plastic when you get down to it. A genuine fur coat will last for WAY longer than anything made of faux fur (while generally being warmer too, though that's a little less relevant in California) and when it does eventually need to be thrown out, it'll biodegrade instead of leaving ten gazillion little bits of microplastic behind.
It obviously sucks that an animal has to die for its fur to be used, but the same goes for the meat industry, and I don't think we're yet at the point of mandating vegetarianism. To me, the larger fur industry should be modelled off the indigenous practices which this law already makes exception for. Fur farms such as those for mink or fox need to be completely overhauled to ensure better treatment of the animals (and shut down if they fail to do so) and the hunting of wild animals for fur should be regulated with a focus on conservation and population control. In the case of the latter, this can include invasive animals that already need to have their numbers reduced for the sake of all the other local animals, such as the nutria in the US (also known as the copyu, originally from South America), the Asiatic raccoon dog in Europe, or the little menace that is the Australian brushtail possum in New Zealand.
Just… generally it strikes me that supporting a sustainable/responsible small-scale fur industry is a much better way to go about it than simply banning the fur trade altogether, and if you ever do want to buy furs (outside of California of course, don't go breaking the law just because a stranger had a little rant in the youtube comments lol), there's lots of indigenous-owned/operated fur vendors already operating out there that are worth considering.
