Under Marcus Aurelius’s rule, the empire thrived despite the economic crises, the numerous invasions and the gruelling pandemic. It is precisely during times of distress that true leaders are tested, and the Caesar rose to the occasion every single time. Aurelius was a philosopher before anything else. Regarded as the last of the Five Good Emperors of Ancient Rome, a term coined by Niccolo Machiavelli in the 15th century, it was his Stoic philosophy that differentiated him from his predecessors.

A person who has no greed can not be bought.
I learned these concepts from my dad. He never read a philosophy book, but somehow developed these characteristics himself. He was a great man in the best stoic way. I wish he were here to laugh when I told him he thought like an emperor.

"whatever happens to you, you must love it because it is your fate". I have a hard time grasping this. What if what happens to you today is one of your children dies? Are you supposed to love that this has happened to you because this is your fate? This is a serious question. Because they say you are supposed to love everything that comes your way.

    🔐 *my key takeaways*

    – Your power is your perception
    – Rise above
    – The obstacle is never in the way, the obstacle is the way
    – Amor fati (love your fate)
    – Memento mori (remember you will 🎲)

Being a stoic is for idiots. If someone kills your son, wouldn't you want revenge? Stoicism is man's futile effort to be unaffacted of life's miseries. By simply changing your perception is for the weak who cannot do anything. Hate, anger, disgust are fuels that must be harnessed to get a beautiful outcome.Marcus was a powerful man so he can afford stoicism, but not regular people.

Yeah, stoicism is really cool and stuff, but to me this comes more like a tool to handle dificult situations than a philosophy of life, once you take things are the way they are just accept it and change the way you percieve it, you get kinda stucked, like, you dont seek to changes or new perspectives, you just accept

I feel like Buddhism (although it's not really an "ism"), was a precursor to Stoicism or directly or indirectly lead to it; both philosophies arose within around 100 or so years of each other and given then that extent of the Greek Empire under Alexander the Great around 330 BC had included India, it's likely that whispers of teachings of the Buddha-Dharma reached Greece and influenced Hellenistic and Stoic philosophies, or am I ill-informed?
