Keep It Simple

The new PlayStation you swore you couldn’t live without. The heap of clothes in your wardrobe that you said you might have a need to wear again someday. We hoard so much stuff and convince ourselves that we need it all. But when our eyes glow red and the fire truck blares its sirens in the distance, none of that seems to matter. Why then do we cling on to these things so much?

As a minimalist, I feel like less stuff gives me more time for myself. The less I have to worry about my possessions, the more I can care about my personality and passion. I am happy that this topic gets more attention right now, but I don't like that it is being used as a marketing strategy by people just to get more money or that people see it as a trend. A style of clothing that will get changed after two years. It doesnt reflect the core values of Minimalism.

I say go through everything you have, if you haven't used it for one year, chances are you don't need it. I encouraged my wife to get rid of most of the decorations, at first she was not happy, now he likes it

I’ve always been a minimalist. In a way. Except clothing, which I spend some money on and take good care of

Exactly. Im 40 years old and live in the center of beautiful Heidelberg Germany. I inhabit a flat with 2 students, to save money. I can walk to work (ICU nurse), but I have an old used bike for less then 200 bucks. I don't need to travel. Heidelberg is paradise. No car, no kids. I only work part time so I have enough money for my hobbies: Bouldering, Running, Gaming on Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch (when our house burns down, I can't lose those games, I own them in the cloud). Life is beautiful nowadays, why would I waste it at work. I only buy cloths when I really need them, mostly cheap.
You can eat healthy for 5 bucks a day (coffee included). I consider whole grain pasta to be healthy, but you should have them split up in to maximum 2 meals a day, and with a good amount of healthy plant seed oils (I prefer olive). Other than that I eat nuts and vegetables. Only drink water, coffee, and tea without milk or sugar. If you're vegan have your vit.B12 and a good source of omega-3 fatty acids (like algae oil), maybe vit.D if you're a nightshift worker or not out in the sun much, and you're good. I'm 40 years old, athletic, everyone thinks I'm much younger. Take good care of your bodies folks and enjoy life 💟

Capitalism leads to the freedom of buying anything or whatever anybody wants thus leading to materialism; minimalism is a communist philosophy based on conformism.

Minimalism is easy.
Most people can't afford much anyway.
Also, it's extremely simple once you are on your own.
The moment you have a family, partner, children and relationships, business connections and else… Suddenly, your focus is smart investment – You need to have items that ease your burden to have more time for everything.
Say what you will, but certain products give ease of life.
People that buy for the sake of buying, more do it for the sake of saying they did it, showing off and trying to get credibility as being wealthy.
People that buy to ease their burdens, invest their earned value back into themselves and what matters to them.
Life is a time management game for the most of it.
The more you have at stakes, the better you learn the game.
A simple minimalist might miss allot of key concepts by just not needing to manage enough for it to get challenging.

I’ve been to the one at 4:14. It’s called the chinati foundation and is located in west Texas. About an hour south of the McDonald observatory. And the room with hundreds of metal boxes blew my mind. Hundreds of them sit here in these old military hangers. And non of them are identical. Each one different. It was surreal to be walking between them. The museum also has some other unique art. They specifically live playing with light and how it interacts with the environment.
If you haven’t been. I definitely recommend it.

Based on my own experience, clutter and unnecessary visual noise at home has triggered some level of OCD since I find myself sometimes trying to put order and “control” the spaces that I know I have control of. It’s a nightmare for the brain because I want to be productive and feel at peace in a space, but can’t let go of the items creating the anxiety in first place. Or let go of the impulses to stop thinking about it. This internal conflict in my mind has a profound effect on my creativity and “taking action on what matters”, mostly because I waste valuable time and energy trying to “reduce the chaos” and other trivialities.

Can't remember if it was Miyamoto Musashi who said it, but Lao Tzu have said something similar:
"'Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.'
I love that quote. And thank you for this video,

I moved towards it many years ago. I hate owning anything more than I have time for. If I don’t use it regularly I get rid of it. I keep as little possible of a wardrobe I can. Keep my kitchen simple and limited to a few utensils and pots and pans. I don’t care for decorative pieces and I don’t celebrate holidays as I believe they only promote consumption. I tell people not to give me gifts because I don’t want them to burden me with something physical not of my choosing. Therefore I do not give them either because I appreciate the possibility of negative impact. I have no sentimental attachment to things anymore and I don’t allow nostalgia to make me keep things. If someone gives me so much as a card, I will appreciate it, and then most certainly throw it away. I am not keeping an inventory of keepsakes I didn’t ask for. I have a high functioning mind with good memory I don’t need keepsakes. All of these things free up finances to allow you to channel them towards things you are truly passionate about. Many people try to have their hands in too much today, and master nothing. I am happier by choosing a few things I love to do with my time, and focusing all my efforts towards that. I don’t have a Bentley and a mansion but I have some nice roller skates and some camping gear that bring me joy. They keep me healthier than a Bentley and mansion would too. Health is wealth imo and for me minimalism promotes it. If everything I owned went up in flames tomorrow, it would be an inconvenience, but not the emotional loss many would suffer.

I think Maximalism was one of the BEST marketing ploys to get people to keep buying things. Not only that but MORE things. Maximalism houses are borderline hoarder levels of stuff. Companies seen a trend that wouldn't benefit them and went "hey look at this instead it's not boring and drap and doesn't make you feel like you are living in poverty". It seems to have worked.

I Minimalism and maximalism are bad. Minimalism is to boring minimalistic houses have no soul. But a maximalism is to much yes I like it but is to much. It is how when the soul of the house is screaming. I like it not to little or to much it must be perfect. With Color but not with ornate lamps.

I have never heard of the type of "minimalism" he's describing. I have what I need. My space is humble, functional, and with room to exercise. It's not a delicate, cultivated, pristine ecosystem devoid of life. It's not modern. It isn't going to die because someone brings in a painting.
Idk. I'm genuinely confused by most of this video. What the fuck kind of minimalism is he talking about? Do people seriously do some of the stuff he talks about? That just sounds like they're clean freaks.

Fair enough, BUT..
I think there’s a difference between liking things and liking the newness and/or status that comes with the things.
Personally, I get very attached to objects. Yeah, I am autistic and that is probably at least partially why. It feels like a personal relationship to me, much like children with their stuffed animals. I don’t buy or keep things for status or to “keep up,” though my brother does. Clutter and COLOUR makes me really happy. I make things constantly! Everything sparks joy for me! In the fire scenario, I would panic. I would try to grab as many things as possible, risking my life. I’ve had nightmares about this exact scenario throughout my childhood.
Not saying my way is the best, or even the healthiest. But it’s fundamentally me.
I just found it interesting to put my personal perspective out there too.

My question is If you wake up in a fire without a worry for anything or a feeling of loss, but how do you live if nothing in your life holds any real value to you, how can life be devoid of any value?
