Jo Jo Harnish | Milt and Gus | Western AF

Out today: “Milt & Gus” by Jodi Harnish, featuring Libby Rodenbough and Liliana Hudgens.

“Hallelujah and Midnight Skies”

Last winter, while traveling around Asheville in search of songwriters, I met up with my friend John James Tourville. John is a musician, producer, recording engineer, and above all a seasoned veteran of the music world.

We were sitting around his newly finished home studio when I asked him which songwriters I needed to catch while I was in the area. He put on a few tracks from Jojo’s new record, Kingdom of Loneliness, and I was blown away.

Jojo is a remnant of the old New Orleans music scene. Or maybe survivor is a better word. I’m extremely partial to that scene. It was a time when some of my favorite musicians had all congregated in one place, creating a community where you could share songs, challenge one another, and ultimately become better at your craft. When it comes to songwriting, that scene comes about as close to the truth as I’ve ever found.

I could hear that same vulnerability and truth in Jojo’s music. What is the Kingdom of Loneliness, after all, if not the human heart? And what better way to understand it, to make sense of it, than through song?

Now let Jojo tell you a story. Give “Milt and Gus” a listen.
