I also had a disaster year for squash in general. First I had squash beetles and i found scraping eggs and a spray bottle of soapy water for the actual beetles to be the best treatment and then just when I thought I had them under control… Squash borers x.x

I've been devastated by sq bugs as well. They've done worse damage than borers. I've sprayed them with just about everything available to the home gardener, and still lost all my squash. I had to develop new strategies when it comes to growing anything in the squash/pumpkin family.
1. COVER EVERYTHING! Don't let the bugs in. Even bees. 🙁 Learn how to hand pollinate.
2. Despite the cover, check leaves frequently. Sometimes SQ bugs are sneaky enough to get under a cover.
3. Spray anyway, but you won't need to as frequently as you would to if they were uncovered.
4. Don't plant anything in the sq family year after year. This includes pumpkins, zucchini, butternuts, yellow, etc… 🙁 I alternate planting every other year. This will keep the pests from establishing themselves in your garden.
5. When you replant, practice crop rotation. It helps with pests, diseases, and soil depletion.

I would love it if you could interview YouTuber Pumpkinista! She grows absolutely massive pumpkins and other giant veg, she also credits growing the pumpkins for saving her life and giving her a reason to get strong and stay well despite serious ill health. Any chance you can invite her to do a podcast episode with her or get her on a live stream? I’m sure you will get some tips! 🎃

The fall colors on the drive were spectacular! Here in Virginia the colors for the last several years have been "meh". Thanks for the beauty shots of the trees!

Maybe the real winning pumpkin is the fun we had and the friends we made along the way? 😅 Thanks for sharing the small town hijinks with us. It's a lot of fun.
Also, I just want you to know that when we pull up your channel, my 1.5 yr old daughter now starts saying "Cow!". Macho man and his posse are appreciated in this house.

You should try growing giant marrows! I've heard they do better in the colder climates.

I think it is back to the greenhouse for bigger pumpkins next year. I suspect that the climate inside it is more congenial towards growth.

Spray squash bugs with either insecticidal soap, pyrethrins, or neem. Source: The Veggie Gardener's Answer Book,by Barbara W. Ellis, 2008, p. 149.

The ground has to be right as well, most people that grow big pumpkins do it in big greenhouses, and they cut off any competing pumpkins so that all resources go to that 1 pumpkin. It's very easy to plant something, but the soil needs to have the correct nutrients for it to grow. You are competing against people that spray the pumpkins with rubbing alcohol, and use petroleum jelly or even a cinnamon paste to stop wounds from destroying the entire pumpkin. They use electric fans too. It's not you can just put in a seed, wait for it to grow and compete that is not what you are competing against.
