First love the channel. Second, your musical knowledge exceeds most of those that I’ve subscribed to. Third, this band has been on my radar since their last one. My love of Jellyfish (and subsequently Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Faulkner) led me to them. You have great insights, great musical references (chord voicings, melody, instrument observations) and lastly, great production. Your enthusiastic Woodstock film/album review nearly left me out of breath. Sorry that this is so damned long, I can be quite verbose.😆 Anyway, thanks for the channel.

2nd comment: please listen to what Justin Hawkins has to say about Church Bells. it might open up some things about this song that i have to say I was crestfallen you dubbed "the weakest song on the album." However, my introduction to your channel began with you changing your time about Animals, so I recognize your willingness to give things a fresh listen. Still love what you're doing, Abigail! 😇🥰

I love that you chose to focus on these guys and this album. I saw them this past May in Raleigh, NC, in a tiny basement club called Kings. To that point I'd only heard their album tracks and several YouTube hosts, esp Justin Hawkins, praising them highly. I liked what i heard, though it did feel a bit like talented pastiche AT FIRST. That live show made me a FULL BLOWN FAN, and I'm a musician and a veteran of hundreds of concerts. I could give you my concert resumé, but that's boring. Let's just say my 1st one in the U.S. was Queen's 1980 tour for The Game. My dad took me. I didn't have a car yet. Once I did, that's helped me go to so many shows, especially punk gigs from The Dickies at the Roxie on Sunset (I grew up in LA, obvi). So there was something just so real about them singing like on the album and not being perfect but being very good and convincing and down to earth and funny and cool, just very likeable guys and talented. Can't praise them enough. I know you completely wrote off Church Bells, but I love it very much, it's so ecstatic, like their version of Penny Lane. and the hidden word play in it: Ring, ring goes the bell = Ringo's the bell. Get it!!??

Well, the Twigs need to land in this century and end their reverence to referenciality. The 70's ended decades ago. Having said that, I'm glad they exist, but….. yes, but….. they need to take themselves a bit more reriously.

This band has gotten airplay on our thesocalsound FM in Los Angeles, so thanks for the biographical unravel, Abby. There doesn't seem to be a limit to what can be done with '60's-'70's style pop updates and many current bands mining this genre still manage to sound fresh. (I'm currently enjoying Umbrellas' latest CD as one example).

I'm envious of tour vinyl collection! I started collecting in 69' starting with Beatles, then the first Zepplin, and Montrose. I accumulated over a thousand albums of all styles. Just 2 years ago every one of them were stolen courtesy of Portland police and the metheads. Along with all CD's and 4 boxes of cassette tapes and the better part of my audiophile (McIntosh) system, irreplaceable speakers, and computers and music instruments galore.

Speaking as a Gen Y kid who grew up listening to oldies radio, Beatles, the bubblegum music of Scooby-Doo, and tunes like "Love Makes the World Go Round" from The Powerpuff Girls, "Aye Aye Eyes" from Dexter's Lab, "I Think I Like You" from Angry Beavers, and "Green Tambourine" from Recess: School's Out, I'm very happy that '60s pop is considered so cool nowadays, especially by Gen Z, and that The Lemon Twigs are so successful.
In the late '00s and the early '10s, it really seemed like retro music was being treated with hostility and mockery, if not plain ignorance. Even I was around twelve years old in 2001, I was harrassed for trying to dress like a greaser ('50s rock is also a big thing in my life), and was surrounded by electronic digital pop and rap music that seemed to be unwelcoming to someone with my tastes. I feel a little vindicated nowadays.

"A Dream is All I Know" gave me early Wings vibes, "How Can I Love Her More?" gives me Turtles vibes, and "Peppermint Roses" is definitely Help!/Rubber Soul era Beatles

The Twigs are amazing. Can't wait to hear what brilliant songs, productions, and performances are next. "My Golden Years" is one of the greatest power-pop songs of all-time. Up there with "Go All the Way," "No Matter What," and other classics. It has about a dozen hooks in it, all of them wonderful!

Thank you for posting this review. When The Lemon Twigs first came out amid enormous hype, I bought their debut album. They seemed like exactly the sort of band I would love "on paper," but for whatever reason, it just didn't grab me, and I guessed I dismissed them as overhyped because were so young. I basically forgot about them in the ensuing years. I've discovered this record from your review, and it's terrific. Exactly the sort of thing I would like. Now, I have to go back and give the first one a re-listen.

Very nice. I didn’t know The Lemon Twigs, so I listened to the album. Thank you for turning me on to them. It’s a nearly perfect pop album, very impressive. Just when I thought there were no musicians left in the world, you show me this! They do show their influences and honor them. There must have been a Big Star record in that collection too. Don’t you hear it?
