So is there like a growing process as you age where all your thoughts are kinda quiet at the back of your mind, then loud at the forefront of your mind, then just a list in front of your mind

the real question is "Where is your head?". now, let's start again.

Sam is very sensitive and poised except when it comes to admitting the most extensively documented genocide in human history. Sadly, that will be what people remember about him the most. Another sad case of “us vs them divide” blindness

I get a kick out of this conversation, Harris‘s description of what it’s like to be at beginning meditator is so accurate.
Alex is a brilliant young man, but he clearly has not meditated much before. He’s making the extremely common assumption that one meditates to find an elevated experience.
It took me a good amount of time to get past that myself. I started meditating looking for a replacement for drugs. And it’s actually not like that at all. All meditation offers is clearer insight into what is actually happening in your own head.

I didn't know anyone was skeptical of meditation, I thought it was just in the realm of exercise. I don't see it as anything "woo" or such as it's just an action to perform, no belief required

How can you be a meditation skeptic if you haven’t done it? You couldn’t even make it make sense!

Breath in. Breath out. Relax. Now let's bomb another Muslim hospital in Palestine. That's good. Great. Keep breathing. Murder is moral. In. Out. Great great. Relax.

What he is describing is Anapaan which is like a practice pre requisite of Vipassana as taught by Gautam Buddha

Lazy skepticism: dismisses without engagement. No experiment, no evidence, just vibes and ego armor

Dear Alex,
I’m turning 60 next month. I started meditating when I was 21, originally with Transcendental Meditation (mantra-based). What meditation does for me is actually very simple: it clears mental noise. Twenty minutes are usually enough to reach a state of deep relaxation.
Over the years, I’ve experienced the occasional neurological or perceptual effect, but I don’t interpret these in mystical terms. I’m not interested in esotericism or spiritual narratives. From my perspective, meditation is a mental technique, not a belief system.
What happens when the mind genuinely quiets down—when thoughts pause for a few moments—is surprisingly powerful. Those brief “empty” states of awareness can be profoundly calming, sometimes more effective than substances people use to relax or escape. No metaphysics required.
Many people struggle with this because of what’s often called the “monkey mind.” You close your eyes, and the thinking just keeps going. Learning to allow short periods of real mental silence is difficult, but when it works, it’s remarkable.
I don’t meditate continuously. I’ve had breaks that lasted weeks or even months. But I always come back to it—not out of discipline or ideology, but because, pragmatically, it works.
Best,
Martin

I don’t understand how you can be skeptical of something like meditation without ever trying it…..does this guy not have 5 mins? lol

Sam is amazing. A violent zionist talking about spirituality and peace. Sums up everything that is wrong with western spirituality.

You don’t have to believe in mediation for it to work. Just try it.
