Honestly, What’s The Big Deal About Taylor Swift?

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | January 22, 2026

One of the biggest selling artists of all time has released a new album this week, yes indeed it’s Taylor Swift. I don’t cover pop artists much on this channel but I do think we can learn a lot from looking at what the appeal is of these megastars. Both her new singles are trending here on YouTube at Number 1 & 2. So, what’s the big deal? Why and how is she so popular? Let’s have a look and see.

I understand that most pop songs are formulaic for decades but when they start saying Taylor Swift has a higher status than Michael Jackson, i simply think that people who say this are lazy or ignorant about the legacy and originality of MJ. She’s not even close to the other legends in the 80s or 90s. Whitney Houston alone can beat all of the pop stars today combined.

I spent around four or five years as the bass player for a large church that catered to those that wouldn't normally be welcomed into traditional churches so we played a lot of "Christian Rock" type music. I'm talking straight down the middle of the road, generic, rock music. I'm not knocking it, just naming it. Taylor's music reminds me of that. It's not bad. It just kind of "is". The few songs of hers I've heard, I've thought of as "Least Common Denominator" music. Seems to me "The Big Deal" about Taylor Swift is that she's operating in a cult of personality. Designed to appeal to as wide a market as possible without challenging the listeners, lest the unfamiliarity offend their ears and drive them away. And it's working like a charm for her. Nothing wrong with that, there's little profit in alienating ones audience, after all.🤑 While not bad, "her music leaves me wanting", is the most diplomatic way I can think of to phrase it.🤷‍♂ Cheers!🍻

Like Michael Jackson and unlike say Prince, she has a team of co-writers and production team e.g. Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff and Max Martin and hired musicians yet the way fans carry on you'd believe her albums are all her own work. Such is a problem with streaming rather than hard copies that list credits. Not putting her down but facts is facts.

Taste is so individual, and yet I seem to be the only one here who isn't a fan of TS. She has a nice voice, and I'm glad it's her influencing young people; she seems to have her head screwed on right.
However, I struggle to remember any of her songs after I've heard them. This is the only one that has stuck, at all, but not for a good reason. I wouldn't recognise her voice if I heard another one of her songs. They just blend into one.

Dear oh dear. Before this I couldn't name a single Taylor Swift song. Thankfully I've forgotten all the titles you said. Hopefully I will never hear the song you are highlighting again. In all seriousness, can you name a song Queen did, and I'm looking at dregs of the lowest of Queen songs that isn't way better than this? And according to Wings of Pegasus, in her last 2 billion grossing latest tour she was miming. Dreadful nonsense. I can see how you are drawn to it Justin because you have shared Taylor Swift moments with your daughter. Thankfully, I have no children so I can honestly say, what a steaming pile of poo.

I do t even need to to even watch the show the title says it all ? I don't believe she writes any of her music and what does she have to be depressed about? If there was ever a plant she is one?

Interesting to watch you pick apart this song. I am not much of a fan, don't seek out her work but I did give this single a listen because of the hype it came out with, at the peak of her biggest tour to date. What hit me was the intelligence in the lyrics, you picked up on the self loathing in it, but what I was thinking when I came to the same conclusion is how healthy it is for the young, impressionable audience to see and hear their idol struggle with self consciousness about her own image and sense of self doubt. It's normal and natural. I think it's healthy for our daughters, nieces and little sisters to hear that message and I'm thankful to her for putting it out there, especially coming from someone they almost unanimously agree is perfect. We're all flawed. We're all the problem. Running from that doesn't solve anything but facing it does, good on you Taylor for bringing it up.

Mass consumption doesn't necessarily equate to actual artistic value. I always respect your opinion but I have to respectfully, wholeheartedly disagree with you on this one.

As a fan I think why she’s a household name and is known in virtually every country is her songwriting and production it varies a lot she has written breakup songs pop songs ballads and even made up stories in her head and written about those too not to mention she’s written about her family. Also her sound/production really differs the main genres she’s done are folk/alternative pop and country even on her pop albums she has some country songs. She’s probably well known cause she’s just been in the industry for awhile. But that’s my personal take and yours can be different
