Homo Sapiens Were Not Alone

There were other humans before us, and even some at the same time as us. Now, Homo sapien is the only human left. But who were the others?

“A number of varieties of Homo are grouped into the broad category of archaic humans in the period that precedes and is contemporary to the emergence of the earliest early modern humans (Homo sapiens) around 300 ka. Omo-Kibish I (Omo I) from southern Ethiopia (196 ± 5 ka) and the remains from Jebel Irhoud in Morocco (about 315 ka) and Florisbad in South Africa (259 ka) are the earliest remains of Homo sapiens. The term typically includes Homo neanderthalensis (430+–25 ka), Denisovans, Homo rhodesiensis (300–125 ka), Homo heidelbergensis (600–200 ka), Homo naledi, Homo ergaster, and Homo antecessor.
There is no universal consensus on this terminology, and varieties of “archaic humans” are included under the binomial name of either Homo sapiens or Homo erectus by some authors.
Archaic humans had a brain size averaging 1,200 to 1,400 cubic centimeters, which overlaps with the range of modern humans. Archaics are distinguished from anatomically modern humans by having a thick skull, prominent supraorbital ridges (brow ridges) and the lack of a prominent chin.
Anatomically modern humans appear around 300,000 years ago in Africa, and 70,000 years ago (see Toba catastrophe theory), gradually supplanting the “archaic” human varieties. Non-modern varieties of Homo are certain to have survived until after 30,000 years ago, and perhaps until as recently as 12,000 years ago. Which of these, if any, are included under the term “archaic human” is a matter of definition and varies among authors. Nonetheless, according to recent genetic studies, modern humans may have bred with “at least two groups” of ancient humans: Neanderthals and Denisovans. Other studies have cast doubt on admixture being the source of the shared genetic markers between archaic and modern humans, pointing to an ancestral origin of the traits which originated 500,000–800,000 years ago.
Another group may also have been extant as recently as 11,500 years ago, the Red Deer Cave people of China. Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum in London has suggested that these people could be a result of mating between Denisovans and modern humans. Other scientists remain skeptical, suggesting that the unique features are within the variations expected for modern human populations.”

    Lol, both Marvel and DC Comics have created their own, fictional homo species.

    The magical folk in DC are called homo magi

    In Marvel, the Atlanteans are called homo mermanus and the mutants (think X-Men) are called homo superior

    While I don't know how we would get along, it would be so interesting to have other species of humans alive with us. Of course, if we didn't wipe them out, and assuming we were close enough ancestors, I imagine we would just end up breeding, as happened with homo sapien and homo neanderthalensis, but still.

    I’m in the top %2 of the general population regarding personal Neanderthal DNA content. I can lay to rest the interbreeding question. We’re trying to flip the genetics back right now.
    NOT a homo.

    There’s a very strong and recent theory that Neanderthals were actually the enemy of primitive man, and because of their build, and intellect, and natural conditions and threats they overcame; that they could effectively see at night like cats, had what would appear to be super human strength and speed; and all but eradicated homosapians (in the theory they hunted and murdered the males and abducted and sexually enslaved homosapian females, which is why there is a minute amount of Neanderthal in us all). I’m bastardizing the theory and not doing it any real justice here; but it was very convincing when I was presented with it by multiple reputable sources, and it all lined up with historical changes in bones and the land over time. I’d advise looking into it.

    Of course there are different species of human alive now. How could you look at all the different bone shapes and skin colors and say "they're the same species".

    Ok, I've been looking for an evolution channel that didn't put me to sleep with a lot of high faluting dialog and charts and such. I think this might be it. In fact, I'm still awake.

    Amazing. The voice of a person NEVER looks like them in real life. I thought QXir would be this scrawny bearded almost a blend of Che-Guevara/Fidel Castro look-a-like. I am ALWAYS wrong imagining the real face behind a voice. Like completely wrong.

    8:21 imagine living your whole life, never once thinking that some evolved form of yourself would later have your entire skeleton in a display case, viewed by millions of other evolved forms of yourself on their tiny viewing screens from thousands of miles away while within their homes with cheeto dusted fingers. Makes me truly wonder what is in store for us of today. What unimaginable thing awaits our bones many thousands of years from now?
