Hayden (aka The Hill Country Devil) talking sobriety, new songs and life.

GemsOnVHS | October 18, 2026

Been awhile since i’d gotten together with my pal Haydem Karchmer (aka the Hill Country Devil), so we decided to meet up earlier in the year for a catch up and chat. We talk sobriety, old movies, new songs and even the first song he ever wrote. This is one of my favorite interviews in this VHS HQ in the office series (https://youtu.be/-uQxfq5p0FE?si=WC3DbApUeAvN-1ss), and my favorite songs of Hayden’s lately. It is always easy for me and Hayden to chat, because we are good friends in real life, so the interviews feel like friends having a laugh rather than an “interview”.

This was earlier in 2024, when he’d gotten fresh out of rehab in West Virginia (huge thanks to Charles Hatcher out at Whizzbang for his help). Sorry for just now posting it, but Hayden refused to let me, and was self conscious about everything involved. As he often is. Makes sense, this format in particular is very “raw” and doesn’t involve a lot of smoke and mirrors. I wouldn’t relent on this one though, because I think it is actually useful for the world to hear, and particularly good.

We’ve filmed a ton of recordings with Hayden over the years. Think you’ve seen them all? Here you can check. (https://youtu.be/u4XbqGOKwlQ?si=BpgNkwUKl-7yIfV3).

I was a junkie from 15 to 30, been to jail, rehab, and prison a gang of times, all my friends died, and my life has been nothing but loss, hardship and strife. A lot of what Mr. Devil has to say really resonates with me, but nothing he’s ever said has resonated with me more than that Rocket Man comment 😂

Rocket Man really was a piece of shit 💯

So proud of you Hayden, you're an inspiration as I've been to 8 rehabs myself and am starting to gain real freedom for the first time in my life. Love you and your music brother

hcd has the look in his face and eyes that all addicts can see and relate to. i cant describe it but you know it when you see it. super happy for him. he’s spot on about drugs filling a hole, a hole that doesn’t magically fill itself when we get clean. we do recover.

hell yeah, I hope you stay sober. I've been on and off the wagon for 7 years, alcoholism and addiction are a gnarly dis-ease. Thanks for the tunes GemsonVHS and Hayden. love the t-shirt 😛

Good luck bro. Ive always uad to be doin something. I look at kicking dope as a huge achievement. I drink a couple beers after work to take the edge off and have been a productive member of society for 8 years now . In my experience trying to stop doing everything guarantees failure. Im rooting for you man I hope you are able to do what I can not.

Exactly one month out from your year anniversary Hayden!!

From one sober addict to another, keep up the incredibly hard work man.

And please keep making some of the best/ moving music I have ever heard.

    Thank you for being you.

We are all rooting for you.

    ❤

Love the new and the old. I wish he would re-record the old stuff. Imagine "To Carry On" in a more beat down and matured voice. Keep fighting brother we need the music, we need your soul.

I'm coming up on 7 years minus a couple dumb days. I don't recommend the slip ups. It's real hard to not just keep going. I changed every aspect of my life. That is what has worked. Oh and I got a job and that shit has been gooood. I love Hayden's music. I'm so stoked for new stuff. This is time 6 or 7 that I have listened to this. Thanks guys.

All drugs but for me opiates yeah, the biggest issue is the burden of knowing how good they feel. Best feeling I've ever felt in my life. If you told Somone that they would obviously want to feel that and feel it every day.

Capo on the 3rd fret. The song starts on a walk up to the C. Hayden uses walk ups/downs for a lot of the chord changes.

Listen to the song to get those down.

    [VERSE 1]

    C

    Well low and behold

    Am

    I’m on the needle again

    F

    What a god dammed joke

    G

    Another song about dope

    C

    That’s how pathetic I am

    C

So always do what your told

    Am

Don’t ever piss in the wind

    F

    Don’t ever gorge upon grief

    G

    Don’t strip your own tree

    C

Lest you end up like me

    [CHORUS]

    Am

    Well I’ve been dreaming

    Dm F

Bout a color not quite like blood

    C

    Fillin up my lungs

    E7

Chasing death like a settin sun

    Am

    And I’m scheming

    F C

    Hocking diamonds made of glass

    G

And the things that fell from trucks all help build

    E

    The kingdom of ash

    F

    Till the wheels fall off

    Dm G

There’s no getting off this track

    C

Guaranteed to owe your money back(?)

    Am F G C

    [VERSE 2]

    C

    Now low and behold

    Am

The walls are closing in fast

    F

    What a god damned mess

    G

    On the laurels I rest

    C

    some make believe past

    C

And all the tales I’ve sold

    Am

    To feed in this appetite

    F

    Have finally run their course

    G

    Depleted all of my stores

    C

    Last flickers of light

    [CHORUS]

    Am

    But I been dreaming

    Dm F

Bout a color not quite like blood

    C/G

    Fillin up my lungs

    E

Chasing death like a settin sun

    Am

    And I’m reeling

    F C

From the bile in my mouth

    G E7

Repercussions spent in coughing fits with sweats that flood the ground(? This line was hard to make out)

    F

    If you don’t keep afloat

    Dm G

    You’re surely gonna drown

    C

sink into the nowhere to be found

    Am F G C

    [VERSE 3]

    C

    Well low and behold

    Am

I’m in the city of tents

    F

And I’m trapped in the fog

    G

    Like a cement bog

    C

Steady blowing my rent (? Hard to make out these last two lines)

    C

    And if you ever seen

    Am

A man as hollowed out as I

    F

    What a god damned shame

    G

    The trouble sure came

    C

    Such an idiots price

    [CHORUS]

    Am

    But I been dreaming

    Dm F

Bout a color not quite like blood

    C/G

    Filling up my lungs

    E

Chasing death like a setting sun

    Am

    And I’m leaving

    F C

Once my ships at least in sight

    C/G

    For the golden hands of

    foreign lands(?)

    E7

Where no creatures prowl the night

    F

    When your lips go blue

    Dm G

No spray will set you right

    G

    You just close your eyes

    C

    And float into the light.

    I welcome any corrections!

I had been trying to find out how you’ve you been doing bro. Happy to see you looking well and love the new songs. Your music is such an emotional kick in the mouth, especially for those of us who battle with sobriety. Keep it going mane you got this.
