In this final episode of The Evolution of Us series, Lindsay Nikole talks about one of the most fascinating and mysterious topics in human evolution ghost populations. These are ancient hominin species we’ve never found fossils of, yet their DNA quietly lives on inside us. From the discovery of the Denisovans through a tiny finger bone, to unknown archaic populations hiding in West African and Amazonian genomes, this episode explores what our DNA reveals about the hidden chapters of human prehistory and how these ancient genes are still affecting our health, cognition, and biology today.

Oh! And I wrote a book, so definitely make sure to grab it—Epic Earth out now!

    Melanisian here🙋🏾‍♂️

Love the info dump! I am currently investigating whether my background might have an explanation for my health.

I suffer from cluster headaches and am looking for any possible clues that might be related. Unfortunately, the hospital can't do much more.

    Love your channel!🔥🔥🔥

hey maybe it's aa stupid question but at wich point can we tell thaat two individuals don't share aa commun species ? is it like a percentaage of common DNA or must it be commun physiological traits ? or something absolutly separated from thoses considerations ?

30:26 an interesting similar situation I'm dealing with personally is alpha-1 antitripsen deficiency. I don't think its an archaic introgrogression but it's arguably provided a slight survival advanage in a preindustrial pre antibiotic world, now all it does is put me at higher risk of developing all kinds of fun problems later in life

I always take research regarding African ancestry with a grain of salt after all of the genetic bull that came out of the 18-1900s regarding African/African Americans. At first they theorized that Africans were the CLOSEST to ancient humans genetically, then, after finding that wasn't the case, now we have a software that esentially states they actually have more of a link than ANY OTHER population to ancient humans. I hope the software used was put together with an unbiased perspective in mind, and I also hope they use it on other populations globally.

So what if you mix the populations in modern humans so a Melanesian ,West African ,Central American ,Basque? I have a nephew that matches this we should genome sequence that kid ❤

I have a new idea for the uncanny valley origin. Weaker hominids were attacked by larger, stronger hominids. Or fewer hominids were attacked by smaller, numerous hominids. We just saw a group of gorillas fry jumped by a group of chimpanzees twice. Same groups. And a gorilla could 1v1 a chimp.

unironically this research/info is so important to our understanding of how to reconcile w the Epsteinians . there are some intense biological factors at work that make an entire subspecies become cannibalistic and pedophilic by choice. targeting those factors and expanding our idea of (our) species in general is gonna be a huge part of our healing process. thanks so much for this video!!!
