Freakazoid Didn’t Fail – Kids’ WB Failed It
Freakazoid! was one of the strangest, smartest, and most unpredictable cartoons of the 1990s—but Kids’ WB never seemed to know what to do with it.
Originally developed by members of the team behind Batman: The Animated Series, Freakazoid! transformed from a straightforward superhero adventure into a chaotic comedy filled with fourth-wall breaks, obscure references, bizarre villains, and jokes aimed far beyond the network’s target audience.
The show attracted teenagers and adults, but Kids’ WB needed younger viewers. Instead of embracing the audience Freakazoid had found, the network moved it around the schedule, placed it at 8:00 on Saturday mornings, and eventually pulled it with episodes still unaired. Then, after the show was already effectively finished, it won a Daytime Emmy.
In this retrospective, we explore the original version Steven Spielberg rejected, how writer Paul Rugg accidentally became the voice of Freakazoid, why Cosgrove was never supposed to become a recurring character, and how a cartoon about downloading the entire internet may have arrived years before the world was ready for it.
Was Freakazoid always destined to become a cult classic—or did Kids’ WB give up on one of its most creative cartoons far too soon?
Let me know what you remember most: Candle Jack, the Lobe, Cosgrove’s perfectly timed interruptions, or simply never knowing what the show would do next.

Freakazoid! Was for kids with AHD. I liked when it went meta and had Stan Lee's picture. That and the first 2 episodes with Antonio Montibon.

Freakazoid was my absolute favorite cartoon as a kid. After it was canceled I dug into how to get it online and downloaded the series over dialup.

Meanwhile the UK broadcast Freakazoid at 4PM on Thursdays. Much more reasonable 😆

I remain convinced Snake Queen is based on Lair of the White Worm (1988), which is way outside of the target demo.

I said this to my friends over 14 years ago. Freakazoid created meme culture before memes were a thing.

Sometimes I randomly break out singing the theme song and no one gets the reference. I honestly think this show was just a decade ahead of its time. The completely random humor animated show didn’t really catch on until the early 2000s. Although one could consider, if this show didn’t exist, would the shows like it have followed? If felt like if this show was more serious and more superhero, it would just be The Tick. I don’t think a show like this could ever be duplicated.

Me and my friend Reid adored this show, and oddly we were exactly in the network's target age (9 and 10, respectively) when it originally aired. We had no idea who made this show, but we both loved old cartoons and TV shows, and decided whoever made it had done so specifically for us. I remember recording each episode on VHS for the express purpose of seeing what they were going to sprinkle throughout the end credits. Well, that, and watching it repeatedly. And then we found out that Spielberg and the Batman TAS showrunners had made it, and that made our noggins explode. I still find myself referencing The Lobe and Cosgrove to this day.
Also, *HUGBEES*.

I was 13 when this came out, and I was on the internet (mom was a SysOp for a BBS, so needed to get into it), so this show was exactly for me. I thought it was okay, but I didn't care that much about it. I liked Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain, but only when it was an Animaniacs short. Didn't enjoy the long for version.

If animaniacs and pinky and the brain could get a reboot/continuation, freakazoid absolutely should have too. It’s perfect for a block with Rick and Morty, and sometimes that show needs a palette cleanser.
“Hey Freakazoid, wanna go get a mint?”
“DO I?!!!”
I don’t know why that particular version of that line stuck with me, but for a while I used it any time I had to leave a conversation. “Sorry guys, I gotta go get a mint.” It didn’t matter that none of them got the reference. It tickled me.

What I remember about Freakazoid
Cosgrove: "Hey Freakazoid, do you wanna go and (insert here)?"
Freakazoid: "Do I!"

Freakazoid was edged-out by competition. Too many silly things going on at the time. Animaniacs and Earthworm Jim already dominated the same lineup and then there were easily forgettable shows like Bonkers that hit the same vein. That said, Deadpool was originally super serious and I'm kind of wondering if Freakazoid was the orignial inspiration behind the character's reinvention.

I loved this show so much. My brother and I still say "HUGBEES" at random times when we're together. It was so out there and so weird and wonderful. It's no wonder they didn't know what they truly had.

I was obsessed with this cartoon. And you’re right, I stopped watching it because it was hard to figure out when it was on. I later bought the DVDs while I was in college, and I found it hard to make it through the entire disc. One or two episodes were fine, but 5 at once was too much. It was chaotic.
