Fatal Beauty Trends From the Victorian Era

Weird History | September 13, 2025

The Victorian Era lasted throughout most of the 1800s. This period of time was known for its technological advancements and for its increased social mobility. And with that came new beauty trends that spread from Britain to the United States by word of mouth and publications aimed at women – some beauty trends that would never happen in today’s world.

Not all of these trends were good – many of them had deadly consequences.

Nothing like rubbing pouson into your skin to make you fashionable. It sure works for me. I rub strychnine on my face every morning. It has the added advantage of keeping rats away. šŸ™„

The majority of corsets were fairly comfortable to wear, so the idea that they suffocated women was somewhat of a myth. There were a small group of people who went to extremes with tightening their corsets, but this was considered extremely dangerous and highly discouraged even back then. There were pamphlets made warning of the hazards of wearing your corsets so tight.

My mom got a little Botox here and there. She really didn’t need it but she’s in her 60’s now and still has absolutely no wrinkles bc she always took good care of her skin.

A little education correction nightshade, also referred as belladonna, is not completely poisonous. Parts of the plant is actually used for medical purposes and is good for you.

2:58 You neglected to expand on tapeworms being used for the "consumption diet." The most important reason you should inform people about this crazy-dangerous "diet" is because people are still using it today. Or rather, it should be said that it has achieved a counter-cultural resurgence in today's fad diet market.

Tapeworm eggs are sold to scientific researchers and others with similar occupations, so it's very difficult to obtain these eggs, but all things are possible on the dark web. Yet another good reason to stay away from it.

Then (and now) people literally put a tapeworm egg inside pill capsules and women would swallow them. These fads are no longer the domain of women because men have caught the "diet bug" and are falling victim to disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and far more besides.

One of the biggest dangers with a tapeworm is that you can not control where it attaches itself. A tapeworm can attach itself to other organs or tissues outside your digestive tract and cause serious damage. When this happens, it’s called an invasive infection. It can cause unpleasant symptoms, like: diarrhea, pain in the abdomen, nausea, weakness and fever.

Dangerous complications that may occur with a tapeworm diet, potentially resulting in death, include: blockage of bile ducts, appendix, or pancreatic duct, neurocysticercosis, (a complication of the brain and nervous system which can cause dementia and vision issues), and disruption in the function of various organs including the lungs and liver.

Anthelmintics or antihelminthics are a group of antiparasitic drugs that expel parasitic worms (helminths) and other internal parasites from the body by either stunning or killing them and without causing significant damage to the host. They may also be called vermifuges (those that stun) or vermicides (those that kill).

Anthelmintics are used to treat people who are infected by helminths, (the collective name for any species of worm) a condition called helminthiasis. These drugs are also used to treat infected animals, particularly small ruminants such as goats and sheep.

Believe it or not, this is the one time ivermectin would actually be useful to you.

So if you have any left over from your Covid-19, you can use it to help get rid of your tapeworm (but while it was designed to be used in horses, if you were vapid enough to take it for Covid, you might as well give it a go)

The only time corsets could cause permanent damage is if the wearer tight laces frequently. I honestly can't stand when people spread misinformation about corsets, please do your research instead of regurgitating what you've heard

Don’t forget to mention the ā€œRadium Girlsā€ that worked in the watch factory. They put radium on their teeth so they would glow in the dark. It was all the rage.. Until….😮
