The Steven Spielberg directed classic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks tells the unbelievable life of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., but evidence suggests many of Abagnale’s famous scams may never have happened at all.

Look up VIPs: Histórias Reais de um Mentiroso, it’s based on a guy called Marcelo Nascimento da Rocha, a scammer from Brazil who pretended to be rich and famous, flew helicopters, fooled celebrities, did a bunch of stuff like that, but for real.

A false story can make its way around the world ten times before the truth has even finished its morning coffee. Kind of like the story about Trump in the 1990s, when interviewed on a late night talk show he was asked what he would do if he wasn't in real estate. He jokingly replied that he'd be selling Amway, and as a result the entire MLM industry quoted it at face value, with the irony completely lost.

For anyone who doesn’t know the word, “con” in conman stand for “confidence”. Always falsely project confidence no matter what.
I always assumed that was the whole point of the film. It’s a con film about a conman who conned people as well as conning his own story.

I once gently asked a coworker who was a chronic liar, "Since you know we all know you lie a lot, why do you keep doing it?" That opened the floodgates. I spent the next half hour listening to a tale of woe about his childhood, specifically how his dad loved and respected his brother so much more than him. He insisted he only lied to get the attention his father denied him. For a second, he had me totally convinced. It was only after he walked away that I realized the flaw in my logic. I had asked a liar why he lies, and I had to ask myself, how stupid am I?
